This Week’s Hot Topic
The latest U.S. nonfarm payrolls are out today, October 2, 2026. How could the data affect Fed policy expectations and opportunities across crypto and other risk assets?

💡 Discussion

1️⃣ Will the data change expectations for the Fed’s next moves?
Consensus forecasts point to a slowdown in job creation, with nonfarm payrolls expected to rise by around 90,000 in September, down sharply from 162,000 in August. The unemployment rate is projected to hold steady at 4.1%. Average hourly earnings are expected to rise 0.3% month-over-month, keeping the annual pace near 3.1%.

The Fed's next move is the real battleground. Markets have already scaled back expectations for an October hike, with futures pricing implying roughly a one-in-three chance. December remains the more likely window for any further tightening. A stronger-than-expected print would challenge the recent Treasury rally and reinforce the case for another hike, while a weaker number could give the Fed room to stay on hold and potentially pivot dovish.

2️⃣ How might crypto and U.S. stocks react in the short term?
Bitcoin has been climbing into the report, trading around $86,650, up 3% on the day and on track for a third consecutive weekly gain. The broader crypto market is cautiously optimistic ahead of the data, though gains have been capped by pre-NFP caution.

For stocks, the reaction will depend heavily on the internal composition of the report. A "goldilocks" scenario—jobs between 70k-110k with steady wages—could see equities grind higher as it confirms a stable labor market without accelerating inflation. A hot print above 150k with rising wages would likely pressure growth stocks and send yields higher, while a very weak number below 50k could trigger recession fears and a broader risk-off move.

3️⃣ Which trading opportunities are you watching now?
The key is to watch the first 15-30 minutes of price action after the release, as initial knee-jerk moves often reverse. Key levels to monitor: BTC's ability to hold above $85,000, the 10-year Treasury yield's reaction around 4.8%, and whether the dollar index can sustain any breakout. For crypto specifically, a dovish repricing (weak NFP + soft wages) could open the door for a test of $88,000-$90,000 on BTC, while a hawkish surprise might see a retest of the $82,000-$83,000 support zone.

What's your read on tonight's data? Are you positioning for a dovish or hawkish surprise?
