#OpenAIAnnualRecurringRevenueNears$70B

OpenAI is approaching a staggering milestone: roughly $70 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR). But the more interesting question for investors is not whether the business is growing — it clearly is. The real question is how much of OpenAI’s future growth is already embedded in a potential $1.4 trillion valuation.

The numbers explain why the market is paying attention.

OpenAI’s ARR reportedly climbed from around $40 billion in mid-August to nearly $70 billion now, representing growth of roughly 75% in just over a month. Since the beginning of Q3, ARR has increased by more than 70%.

Enterprise adoption is accelerating as well. Revenue from enterprise customers has reportedly doubled since July, while OpenAI now has around 9 million paid enterprise seats.

Consumer growth is also becoming a major part of the story. Q3 incremental consumer revenue reportedly exceeded the entire increase generated during 2025. ChatGPT is reported to have around 900 million weekly active users and more than 50 million paid subscribers.

That combination — enterprise expansion, consumer monetization and AI coding demand — is what makes OpenAI’s growth profile different from a conventional software company.

But growth alone does not determine valuation.

Reports have placed OpenAI’s potential valuation around $1.4 trillion as it considers raising more than $30 billion. Earlier financing reportedly valued the company at approximately $852 billion, while September reports suggested a target around $1.2 trillion. Dealroom has also projected a potential IPO valuation of roughly $2 trillion.

At $1.4 trillion against $70 billion of ARR, the headline multiple is approximately 20x ARR.

That sounds extremely expensive by traditional standards. However, the comparison becomes more interesting when looking across the AI sector.

Anthropic has been discussed at a valuation of around $2 trillion against approximately $6.5 billion of ARR, implying a much higher multiple. Nvidia, meanwhile, has traded at a valuation above $4 trillion against annual revenue above $160 billion, putting its price-to-sales multiple in the neighborhood of 25x.

So OpenAI would not necessarily sit at the extreme end of AI valuations based purely on revenue multiples.

But there is a major catch.

The market is not valuing OpenAI only on today’s $70 billion ARR. It is effectively pricing a future in which OpenAI can generate hundreds of billions of dollars in annual revenue. A frequently discussed long-term target is around $350 billion of revenue by 2030.

That means investors are paying today for a substantial portion of tomorrow’s AI economy.

And that creates two major risks.

First is capital intensity.

OpenAI’s growth requires enormous computing infrastructure, and reports have pointed to potentially hundreds of billions of dollars of negative free cash flow over the coming years. Rapid revenue growth is impressive, but investors will eventually focus on how efficiently that revenue converts into cash.

Second is competition.

Google, Meta, xAI, Anthropic and other companies are investing aggressively in frontier AI, chips, data centers and consumer products. OpenAI cannot assume that today’s market position automatically translates into the same share five years from now.

The potential IPO wave could also become an important market event. OpenAI and Anthropic are being discussed at enormous valuations, while SpaceX has also reached extraordinary private-market levels. If several mega-sized technology companies access public markets around the same period, they could influence liquidity, investor allocations and valuation expectations across AI stocks.

For companies such as Nvidia, AMD and Marvell, the eventual public-market pricing of AI leaders could become an important valuation reference point.

My view is simple: OpenAI’s $70 billion ARR demonstrates that AI commercialization is moving far beyond the experimental stage. But a $1.4 trillion valuation is also a statement about the future.

The market is not only asking whether OpenAI is growing.

It is asking whether today’s explosive growth can eventually become a $350 billion-plus annual revenue machine.

That is where the real valuation debate begins.
