Privacy Coins: Second Wave or ZEC Reflex?

Zcash’s ETF-driven rally may have created a more important signal than ZEC itself: capital is beginning to rotate across the privacy-coin complex.
ZEC’s move was followed by synchronized strength in **Dash (DASH)** and **Horizen (ZEN)**. The question is whether this represents genuine sector-level repricing—or simply leveraged positioning around the same narrative.
The credibility anchor:
Zcash crossed $1,000 on September 4, 2026, for the first time in nearly a decade, around the launch of Grayscale’s ZCSH, described as the first U.S. spot ETF offering direct privacy-coin exposure. ZEC’s hash rate also accelerated alongside the rally.

The second-wave thesis is straightforward: if institutional access is validating privacy as an investable category, capital should eventually broaden beyond ZEC.
Breadth signals worth watching:
DASH: roughly +165% from mid-August to its September 6 peak.

ZEN: strong relative performance versus BTC over the 90-day window.

DASH futures: open interest increased ~20%, alongside positive funding—evidence of fresh leveraged positioning.

But there is an important caveat.
Correlation is not confirmation.
The synchronized moves across ZEC, DASH and ZEN can indicate sector-wide demand—but they can also represent narrative contagion. Thin liquidity makes privacy assets particularly sensitive to relatively small capital rotations.
More importantly, rising OI + positive funding does not tell us whether the positioning is fundamental conviction or leveraged momentum chasing.
The real test

The privacy sector doesn't need another vertical move to prove the thesis.

It needs to demonstrate relative strength after ZEC cools off.
If DASH and ZEN retain liquidity, volume, and relative performance during a ZEC pullback, the case for genuine sector breadth becomes stronger.

Until then, the evidence supports broadening momentum—not yet structural repricing.
Watch the breadth, not just the headline.

ZEN’s relative performance against BTC over the past 90 days is pretty impressive, but the sample period is too short. Let’s wait for a full bull-bear cycle before assessing it.

Key test: Can DASH/ZEN maintain relative strength as ZEC cools off? That is the definitive proof of sector rotation.

DYOR is all well and good, but people who actually DYOR should notice: all three coins move at the same time, with correlation maxed out—so much for diversification.

The privacy sector has to prove it’s not a meme by capturing liquidity when the leading projects cool off; it’s still too early to talk about a second wave.

Grayscale's move on ZCSH has indeed opened the door for institutions to privacy coins, but there's still a world of difference between a single asset and a repricing of the entire sector.
