On Chain Data Shows Bull Market Traits: Most Sales in Profit and Market Still Bullish, Plus MSTR Leading Nasdaq 100
Recent on chain review from Glassnode points to a classic bull market trait: the majority of coins moved on chain are moved at a profit, yet market structure remains bullish rather than topping. At same time, equity proxy MSTR has led Nasdaq 100 with about 48 percent gain over past month, becoming top performer in index. Together, these two signals link on chain health with equity market leadership.
What Glassnode Metric Means
The core metric is percent of spent output profit. When holders move coins, we can compare current price to cost basis at time those coins last moved. If price is above cost basis, that move is counted as profit taking. In bear phases, this ratio falls below 50 percent, meaning most moves are at a loss and reflect capitulation. In bull phases, ratio rises above 80 to 90 percent, meaning most selling is profitable.
Current reading shows most on chain sales are in profit. This is typical of uptrend where long term holders distribute into strength, not of top where profit taking becomes euphoric and is followed by sharp supply overhang. Difference lies in pace and in response of demand.
Why Profit Taking Can Be Bullish
Profit taking alone is not bearish. Healthy bull market needs distribution. Long term holders who bought low need to sell to new buyers at higher levels. This transfers coins from strong hands with low cost to new hands with higher cost, which raises average cost basis of market and builds support.
What matters is whether demand absorbs this profit taking. If demand absorbs, price holds high, funding stays balanced, and open interest grows in orderly way. If demand fails to absorb, price drops quickly, funding turns negative, and profit ratio falls as loss selling appears. Current data shows demand is absorbing, so market still displays bull traits.
Long Term Holder vs Short Term Holder Behavior
Data shows long term holder supply has declined slightly, which is consistent with distribution, while short term holder supply has risen. This rotation is normal in middle stage of bull. Long term holders sell gradually, short term holders buy and create new cost basis clusters that act as support on pullbacks.
Realized cap is rising, which means new capital is entering and total cost basis is moving up. Rising realized cap alongside price holding high is a sign of capital inflow, not just leverage driven move.
SOPR and MVRV Context
Spent Output Profit Ratio above 1 means average coin moved is in profit. Current SOPR is above 1 but not at extreme euphoria levels seen at major tops. Market Value to Realized Value is above 1.5, indicating market is in profit overall, but not at levels above 3 that historically marked late stage euphoria. This middle zone often aligns with continuation rather than peak.
MSTR Leading Nasdaq 100: Equity Link
MSTR, known for large BTC treasury strategy, has risen about 48 percent over past month and has led Nasdaq 100, becoming top performer in that index. This equity leadership matters because it bridges traditional equity flow with digital asset exposure.
When MSTR outperforms Nasdaq 100, it signals two things:
1. Equity investors are using MSTR as proxy for BTC exposure within brokerage accounts where direct spot purchase may be less convenient. Outperformance shows appetite for BTC linked equity. 2. Market is rewarding firms that hold BTC on balance sheet, viewing BTC treasury as growth asset rather than risk. This can encourage other public firms to consider similar strategy, which creates incremental demand for BTC itself.
Correlation Between On Chain Bull Traits and MSTR Strength
There is a feedback loop. On chain profit taking that is absorbed shows strong spot demand. Strong spot demand lifts BTC price. Higher BTC price lifts value of BTC held by MSTR, which lifts MSTR equity price. Higher MSTR price draws more equity flow, which brings attention to BTC, which supports further spot demand. This loop has been visible during prior bull phases.
Risk to Monitor
Even with bullish traits, risk remains. If profit taking accelerates and percent of supply in profit approaches 95 percent plus for extended period, it may signal overheat. If short term holder cost basis cluster near current price breaks down, it could trigger cascade of loss selling. For MSTR, premium to net asset value of its BTC holdings can expand sharply; if premium compresses, equity may underperform even if BTC holds.
Also, funding and open interest need to be watched. If open interest rises much faster than spot volume and funding becomes highly positive, leverage may be driving price rather than spot absorption. Current funding is elevated but not at extreme, which supports view that spot demand is still driver.
Outlook
Glassnode view that market still shows bull market traits despite majority of sales being in profit is consistent with mid bull phase, not late phase. Profit taking is present, but demand is present as well, and cost basis is moving higher in orderly way.
MSTR leading Nasdaq 100 with 48 percent monthly gain reinforces that equity market is also recognizing BTC related value. When both on chain and equity signals align, overall market health improves.
For forward looking analysis, focus on: percent of spent output in profit staying above 75 percent but below 95 percent, realized cap trend, long term holder net position change, and MSTR premium to its BTC holdings. As long as those remain in constructive range, bull structure remains intact and pullbacks are likely to be bought.
In sum, majority of on chain sales being profitable is not a warning sign by itself. In context of rising realized cap, orderly distribution, and equity leadership via MSTR, it is a sign that market is in a healthy bull phase where profit is taken, transferred, and re invested at higher levels.
