Since bottoming out in April 2025, Micron Technology (MU) has staged an extraordinary rally, with its stock price surging 15x in 17 months. However, after hitting a recent high in June this year, the stock quickly retreated, with a cumulative pullback of 22%.
As the company approaches the key date of releasing its latest earnings report on September 30, this deep correction has triggered intense market debate: Is this adjustment a healthy entry opportunity in the AI memory supercycle, or an early warning of a sector-cycle reversal?
The core driver behind Micron’s explosive stock-price rise has been the strong demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) generated by the AI industry. As 3D-stacked DRAM chips designed for AI large models and high-performance computing, HBM is core supporting hardware for AI computing infrastructure. Only Micron, Samsung, and SK hynix have achieved mass production globally, and the industry has long faced a supply shortage. This supply-demand imbalance has completely unleashed Micron’s earnings.
The company’s revenue for the first three quarters of fiscal 2026 reached $79 billion, up 203% year over year, while net profit surged from $5.3 billion in the same period last year to $47 billion.
Analysts forecast that Micron’s full-year fiscal 2026 revenue growth will reach 247%. Although growth is expected to slow in fiscal 2027, it could still maintain a high growth rate of 88%. Supported by these strong results, the company’s current market capitalization has reached $1.1 trillion, with a gross margin as high as 72.6% and a forward P/E ratio of just 6x. Its valuation is at the low end of the industry, becoming the core basis for the market’s bullish view. Even more promising is the industry’s long-term supply-demand structure. HBM production is extremely difficult, consuming 3x as many wafers as ordinary DRAM, while EUV lithography capacity constraints mean that industry capacity will be difficult to expand substantially in the short term.
SK hynix predicts that the DRAM supply-demand imbalance will reach a historical peak in 2027, with the market unable to return to balance until 2030 at the earliest. Combined with leading industry companies signing long-term supply agreements, the AI-driven memory supercycle has solid fundamental support. However, the inherent strong cyclicality of the memory industry has cast a shadow over Micron’s rally. Memory chips are standardized commodities, and the industry continually cycles through “shortages and price increases—capacity expansion and oversupply—price cuts and losses.”
The industry is currently at the peak of its cycle, with earnings and gross margins both at historical highs. Once demand for AI infrastructure slows at the margin, the supply-demand balance could quickly reverse, causing memory prices to fall sharply and directly hurting Micron’s profitability.
Looking at its historical performance, Micron’s cyclical risks cannot be ignored. The company’s stock price has plunged sharply several times in the past, including multiple declines of more than 50% and two deep drops of more than 80%. Its seemingly low valuation currently contains an obvious trap: if the company’s net profit falls back to fiscal 2025 levels, its current P/E ratio would surge into the triple digits, completely reshaping the stock’s valuation framework. In addition to industry-cycle risks, seasonal market risks are further increasing uncertainty.
September has historically been the weakest month for US stocks, and this effect is significantly amplified in midterm election years. Historical data shows that in September and October of midterm election years, the S&P 500 has repeatedly suffered sharp pullbacks of more than 5%; weak overall market sentiment will weigh on the performance of growth stocks. With multiple factors converging, Micron is now at a critical crossroads ahead of its earnings report.
In the short term, the shortage of AI memory remains unchanged and the supercycle has not yet ended. The earnings report will likely show continued strong performance, creating a potential short-term trading opportunity; but from a long-term perspective, signs of a turning point in the industry cycle are emerging, and negative news at high levels could easily trigger selling, making the stock unsuitable for long-term holding.
This 22% pullback is neither a signal that the rally has ended nor a definitive opportunity to buy the dip. Micron’s September 30 earnings report and subsequent guidance will serve as the core turning point for assessing AI memory demand and determining the direction of the cycle, directly deciding the stock’s subsequent trajectory.$MU
