Gate’s Stock Perpetual Expansion: Coverage Is Only the Beginning

When we look at Gate’s latest stock perpetual futures data, the headline numbers are impressive — but I think the more interesting story is what those numbers reveal about the changing structure of crypto trading.

According to recent data, Gate’s stock perpetual futures trading volume increased 308% month over month, marking the third consecutive month of triple-digit growth. At the same time, Gate has expanded its equity-linked perpetual coverage to 385 contracts, the highest among the major exchanges compared in the latest DefiLlama research.

But I don't think the real significance is simply being “number one.”

The bigger question is: What happens when traditional financial assets increasingly enter crypto-native trading infrastructure?

For years, crypto exchanges were primarily built around BTC, ETH and other digital assets. Today, the boundary is becoming much broader. Stocks, commodities, indices and other real-world assets are increasingly being represented through derivatives and perpetual contracts.

This creates a completely different competitive landscape.

Breadth becomes the first gateway.

If traders can find more assets on one platform, they have more reasons to explore that platform. Gate’s coverage of hundreds of stock-related perpetual contracts means traders are not restricted to only a handful of famous names. The product universe becomes much wider, ranging from major companies to semiconductor-related assets and other market themes.

But breadth alone is not enough.

The second stage is depth.

A platform can list hundreds of contracts, but listing a contract and making it genuinely tradable are two different things.

This is where the latest liquidity data becomes particularly interesting.

DefiLlama’s research examined the five most-traded equity perpetual contracts — SNDK, SKHYNIX, SPCX, SOXL and MU — and found that Gate had the deepest resting liquidity at the top of the order book on four of those five contracts. The research also examined liquidity across deeper order-book levels, providing a more meaningful picture than listing numbers alone.

That distinction matters.

Coverage attracts attention.
Liquidity creates usability.
Depth creates confidence for larger traders.

Gate’s RWA perpetual market has also expanded rapidly. CoinDesk data cited by Gate showed RWA perpetual trading volume reaching $64.7 billion in August, up 158% month over month, while Gate’s market share increased from 5.32% to 12.6%. Meanwhile, RWA perpetual open-interest share reached 49.6% among global centralized exchanges.

To me, this points toward a broader transition: crypto exchanges are increasingly becoming multi-asset trading infrastructures, rather than platforms focused exclusively on cryptocurrencies.

And there is another important test ahead.

Can today’s long-tail listings maintain meaningful liquidity six months, one year, or two years from now?

That is where the difference between coverage and sustainable market infrastructure will become clearer.

If Gate can continue combining a large product universe with competitive order-book depth, consistent trading activity and reliable liquidity, then the stock-perpetual segment could become an important part of its broader multi-asset strategy.

The next chapter is not simply about how many contracts can be listed.

It is about how many can remain liquid, useful and actively traded.

That is the metric I will be watching.

Coverage opens the door.
Liquidity keeps traders inside.
Depth determines whether the ecosystem can scale.

And this is why Gate’s stock perpetual expansion deserves attention beyond the headline rankings.
