Trump made Warsh speechless again early this morning!

He kept calling for rate cuts, yet Warsh’s first major move after taking office was a 25 BP (basis point) rate hike.

I’d been wondering: Why is Trump so fixated on cutting rates?

At its core, it comes down to two things: political interests + fiscal pressure.

It can stimulate the economy while also easing the interest burden from the massive debt of the U.S. government.

But here’s the question:

When Trump pushed Warsh into office, did he really not expect him to take the opposite stance?

Or are they playing good cop and bad cop?

Trump says: Cut rates already!

Warsh says: No can do. Inflation is too high, so we need to raise rates first!

No problem! This is honestly kind of fancy!

When the nomination was made, did they really not do their homework, or did they deliberately find a dissenter to stage a good-cop/bad-cop act?

The good-cop/bad-cop script is now confirmed; in the end, Wash takes the blame anyway, and Trump always wins.

A 25 bps rate hike means even greater interest pressure on U.S. Treasuries—can Trump sleep tonight?
