A long-awaited crypto market structure bill encountered a key obstacle in the U.S. Senate. On September 15, the motion to advance the CLARITY Act failed to pass by a vote of 49 to 50, while normal advancement requires 60 votes.
This means the U.S. digital asset industry will have to continue waiting for a more unified and clearly defined federal regulatory framework. The controversy surrounding the bill has stemmed not only from partisan divisions, but also from issues including public officials’ crypto asset interests, competition between the banking system and stablecoins, and the allocation of regulatory authority.
