NVIDIA | NVDA: Buying AI Software’s “Gateway to Influence” for $12.9 billion
NVIDIA announced the acquisition of Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Hugging Face is a core hub for model hosting, dataset sharing, and open-source collaboration, occupying a position similar to GitHub for traditional software engineers, with millions of researchers and engineers worldwide publishing, accessing, and iterating on models there.
Once the acquisition is completed, NVIDIA will no longer be merely a computing-power manufacturer but will also control the gateway to the developer ecosystem, significantly boosting its ability to coordinate pricing between hardware and software.
The impact across the industry chain also warrants attention: upstream, TSMC’s (TSM) 2nm process is being rolled out faster, with NVIDIA and Google (GOOGL) both having invested resources in the node. More powerful chips will provide more ample computing support for training large models; downstream, independent AI cloud service providers and model startups face a delicate situation, relying on NVIDIA GPUs while potentially competing with NVIDIA at the developer-ecosystem level.
The market’s reaction to the acquisition was relatively restrained, with investors still digesting whether the integration can be implemented and whether regulators will object to this major merger spanning hardware and software.
