Altera, the programmable-chip maker backed by Intel and Silver Lake, has confidentially submitted a draft registration statement on Form S-1 to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), marking a major step toward a potential U.S. initial public offering (IPO). The filing was announced on September 15, 2026.
Altera said the number of shares to be offered and the price range have not yet been determined. The IPO remains subject to SEC review and market conditions, meaning the timing and final size could still change.
The company develops field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and programmable computing and connectivity solutions used in data centers, telecommunications, industrial systems, artificial intelligence applications, and aerospace and defense. Its technology can complement traditional processors and GPUs, including for AI-related workloads.
Altera was acquired by Intel for approximately $16.7 billion in 2015. In 2025, Silver Lake acquired a 51% controlling stake for about $4.46 billion, while Intel retained a 49% interest. The transaction valued Altera at approximately $8.75 billion.
Reuters previously reported that the IPO could potentially raise more than $2 billion, although that figure has not been confirmed by Altera and remains subject to change.
The planned listing comes as investor interest in semiconductor and AI-related companies remains strong, putting Altera’s FPGA technology and AI exposure under close market attention.$XAG $XAUT
