Bank of Japan Intervenes in Currency Market with $125 Trillion Yen-Buying Operation on July 30-31

USDJPY-0.37%
The Bank of Japan, in coordination with U.S. authorities, conducted a dollar-selling, yen-buying intervention on July 30-31 valued at approximately 13.78 trillion yen (roughly 125 trillion won), according to BOJ account analysis. The intervention scale exceeded Japan's April operation of 11.73 trillion yen, reflecting heightened concerns over yen weakness. The USD/JPY exchange rate fell sharply from above 164 to 155 within two days following the action. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that yen weakness triggers depreciation pressure on other currencies, including the Korean won, citing excessive volatility concerns.
