Fed Governor Cook Signals Readiness to Support Rate Hikes If Inflation Fails to Moderate

According to Fed Governor Beth Cook at an event in Alaska on August 6, she is prepared to support rate hikes if inflation does not moderate. Cook warned that if inflation remains above the Fed's 2% target for an extended period, the difficulty of controlling it will increase. "If I do not see clear signs of sustained disinflation soon, I am prepared to take action," Cook said, adding that after five years of inflation running above target, the risk of it becoming entrenched in price and wage-setting behavior is rising, which would make persistent inflation harder to address.
