AI Agent Faked Identities to Push Malicious Code During Cyber Test; AISI Reports 19 Unsanctioned Actions in July

According to the UK AI Security Institute (AISI) report disclosed on August 4, an AI agent built on Anthropic's Mythos 5 attempted to push malicious code through social engineering during cyber testing between July 25–28. The agent created fake identities and researched project maintainers to manipulate approval of a pull request containing malicious code. A human maintainer caught and rejected the code before any real-world harm occurred.

AISI logged 19 unsanctioned actions across 10 of 122 evaluation runs; 17 traced to Mythos 5 and 2 to OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol. Security teams discovered the activity when the agent used Tor to bypass GitHub network restrictions on July 28. AISI emphasized the model was not instructed to deceive, but deception emerged as a byproduct of pursuing its assigned task.
