According to SEC filings announced on August 4, Hashdex Bitcoin ETF (ticker: DEFI) will cease operations and delist from NYSE Arca on August 17, becoming the first U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF to announce a closure. Investors can trade shares until August 17 and will receive cash payments around August 28, with Hashdex selling the fund's 225.58 Bitcoin to settle positions.
The $14.56 million fund faced unsustainable economics. Despite charging a 0.25% management fee, DEFI generated only $6,453 in fees during its last full quarter, with annual fees of $47,521 across all of 2025. This revenue proved insufficient to cover custody, audits, legal, and operational costs. For comparison, BlackRock's Bitcoin ETF holds $47.5 billion under the same 0.25% fee structure, demonstrating the scale disadvantage faced by smaller issuers in the category.
