Global Private Equity Firms Seize Control of South Korea's M&A Market, Local PEFs Face Contraction

According to Korea Economic Daily's Market Insight report released today (August 5), global private equity funds (PEFs) have taken the lead in South Korea's M&A market, while domestic PEF activity has contracted sharply. The shift is driven by weak Korean won exchange rates and the Homeplus crisis, which has dampened local PEF operations. Among domestic companies acquired by PEFs with deal values exceeding ₩500 billion, global players have significantly expanded their market share, raising concerns about the potential collapse of South Korea's two-decade-old domestic PEF ecosystem.
