Coupang Posts $556M Q2 Operating Loss Amid Regulatory Fine, Core Commerce Growth Slows to 1%

According to its SEC filing released on August 5, Coupang Inc posted a Q2 operating loss of $556 million, swinging from a $149 million profit in the same period last year. The South Korean e-commerce platform's total revenue reached $8.856 billion, up 4% year-over-year, but was impacted by a 410-million-dollar regulatory fine from South Korea's Personal Information Protection Commission, which was reflected in operating expenses.

The company's core product commerce revenue was $7.425 billion, growing just 1% year-over-year—continuing the slowdown seen in Q1—as per-user revenue declined 2% in dollar terms to $301. The losses were also driven by Coupang's expansion investments in Taiwan, where the company is building fulfillment and last-mile infrastructure.
