#NFPShockSpikesRateCutOdds The July employment report was really bad. It said that the number of people working which is called nonfarm payrolls went down by 23,000. This was a surprise because people thought it would go up. Also the numbers for the two months were revised, which means they were changed and it turned out that 103,000 fewer people were working than we thought. The number of people looking for work which is called labor-force participation is really low 61.4%. This is the lowest it has been since 1976 except for during the pandemic. The unemployment rate did go down a bit to 4.1% but that is because a lot of people stopped looking for work not because more people got jobs. What the Revisions Reveal The bad news is not just that the number of people working went down this month. The revisions, which are the changes to the numbers are also important. It turns out that May and June were not as good as we thought and that means that the job market has been getting weaker for a while now. The average number of jobs per month has gone down a lot, which changes what we thought about the economy and what the Federal Reserve might do. Immediate Market Response When the report came out people started thinking that the Federal Reserve might not raise interest rates in September all. The chances of a rate hike went down from 58% to 44%. This made the price of gold go up 3% to $4,368 and silver went up even more over 5%. The stock market also went up with the Nasdaq 100 futures up about 1% and the S&P 500 futures about half a percent. This is because when the job market is weak it means that the Federal Reserve might not raise interest rates and that is good for some investments, like gold and stocks. Sector Detail Worth Noting Some parts of the economy are still doing okay like businesses but the government sector lost a lot of jobs. Education jobs especially went down by 50,000. Some other areas, like finance and leisure are also losing jobs. Healthcare is still doing well but it is not as strong as it was. Peoples wages are not going up much as they were which is another sign that the job market is weak. Next Checkpoint Now we have to wait and see what the inflation report says on Wednesday. If inflation is low it will mean that the Federal Reserve is less likely to raise interest rates and that will be good for gold and stocks.. If inflation goes up then the Federal Reserve might still raise interest rates and that will be bad for those investments. Bitcoin is also waiting to see what happens. It needs to go above $65,000 to keep going up. Closing View The July employment report shows that the job market is getting weaker faster than we thought. The number of people working is going down. The Federal Reserve might not raise interest rates after all. This has already changed what people think about the economy. It has made gold and stocks go up. Now we just have to wait and see what the inflation report says. The July NFP report and the market reaction, to it are what I think they mean. The moving averages are bearish with MA5 at $76.70, MA10 at $76.84, and MA30 at $77.06, all above price and sloping down, confirming selling pressure.
