Why Did Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) Fall in the Last 24 Hours?

Changes to WBTC’s custody arrangements continue to affect market confidence. Before August 2024, BitGo alone held the three keys; custody control was subsequently shifted to an arrangement involving BiT Global and multiple regions, drawing attention to custody concentration. A multi-custodian upgrade proposed on 2026-10-23 aims to reduce reliance on a single custodian by 30%, but may also prompt renewed scrutiny of the earlier single-point risk. Babylon proposed connecting a native Bitcoin vault to Aave V4, allowing holders to borrow without handing over their private keys and using WBTC for liquidation. If implemented, the proposal could weaken WBTC’s distinctive demand as an entry point to Bitcoin DeFi. Short-term technical signals are weak but mixed: the one-hour moving average is bearish, while moving averages on the other listed timeframes and RSI across timeframes are neutral. Bid-side order-book depth is greater, but overall depth is thin and does not by itself establish selling pressure or a continuing trend.

About Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC)

WBTC is an ERC20 token pegged 1:1 to Bitcoin, launched by BitGo, Kyber Network, Ren, and others. Issued on Ethereum, all WBTC is backed by Bitcoin, with custodians holding Bitcoin corresponding to WBTC, verifiable on-chain. WBTC can only be minted by custodians with merchant approval, and it is burned when exchanged for Bitcoin.

Use Cases and Features

Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) is a multichain wrapped token that brings Bitcoin liquidity to smart contract networks. On supported chains, it can be used in decentralized finance scenarios, such as loan collateral, liquidity provision, or on-chain trading. WBTC is not a native Bitcoin asset; its value peg and redemption mechanism rely on reserve custody, authorized participants, and the relevant on-chain contracts.

Supply and Issuance Mechanism

WBTC is backed by BTC at a 1:1 ratio. After an authorized merchant submits BTC and an authorized custodian confirms it, the system mints the corresponding amount of WBTC; upon redemption, WBTC is burned and the corresponding BTC is released. The official site provides a transparency portal for checking reserves, supply, and minting/burning records.
