Tether (USDT) Price

USD₮ (commonly called USDT) is an on-chain token issued by Tether and denominated with reference to the U.S. dollar; under its terms, each USD₮ corresponds to a redemption denomination of one U.S. dollar. It can be held and transferred on supported blockchains, but the token itself is not U.S. dollar cash, legal tender, or a bank deposit. Holding USD₮ means holding an on-chain token and a contractual arrangement to subscribe with or redeem from the issuer when the terms are met; it does not mean that the holder directly owns a particular dollar asset in Tether's reserves. Tether's terms state that each circulating USD₮ is backed by reserve assets equal to its stated value, which may include cash, cash equivalents, and other assets.

USD₮ usually references one U.S. dollar because Tether combines circulating-token reserve coverage with fiat redemption arrangements under its terms: eligible direct customers may request redemption at one dollar per token, less applicable fees. That redemption route provides a mechanism for the price to remain near the dollar, but it does not guarantee that every secondary-market trade is exactly one dollar. The secondary-market price still depends on buyers and sellers, market liquidity, network and platform availability, and whether direct redemption is available to the relevant party. If the market price diverges, only those who can obtain tokens, meet verification and minimum-amount conditions, and complete direct redemption or subscription may be able to use the issuer's process. Therefore, the “peg” is a target pricing relationship within a reserve-and-redemption framework, not a promise of a trading price at every moment.

Creating USD₮ on-chain does not mean that it has entered circulation. Tether states that a creation transaction must be signed by multiple authorized private keys and broadcast; newly created tokens are first “authorized but not issued,” held in the Tether treasury, and excluded from the token's circulating market capitalization. Multi-signature authorization prevents a single private key or person from authorizing creation alone. Only when tokens leave the treasury, for example when issued to a purchasing customer, do they become actually circulating “issued” USD₮ and receive the reserve support described by Tether. Tokens returned after customer redemption may remain in the treasury, out of circulation for future issuance, or may be destroyed; destruction reduces the number of authorized tokens on that chain. Creation volume, treasury inventory, and circulating supply are therefore different measures, and one on-chain creation should not be treated directly as additional circulating supply.

USD₮ circulating-supply disclosures and reserve reports should be considered separately. Tether says it typically discloses the number of circulating tokens daily; reserve reports are usually issued quarterly, prepared by BDO Italia, and prepared under standards set by the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB). The former mainly answers the scale of circulation at the time of disclosure, while the latter helps explain reserves and asset categories as of the reporting date. The two types of data do not have the same dates or assurance scope. Tether expressly says that it does not undertake to update at a fixed time, and public circulating-supply information may not reflect the actual amount when viewed because of information delays. Therefore, when comparing reserves and circulating supply, first check the respective as-of dates; do not treat circulating supply displayed on a webpage on a given day as a complete conclusion about reserves on that same day.

USD₮ can be deployed on multiple blockchains, but a transfer settles the specific token contract or asset identifier on the selected network; the name “USDT” alone does not make it arrive across networks. Tether's supported-protocols page lists different networks and their contract addresses or asset IDs, and requires integrators to clearly specify which protocols they support. Therefore, before sending, verify the sending network, the network supported by the recipient, and the corresponding asset identifier. If networks do not match, the recipient may not recognize or credit the transfer; even if an address format appears usable, that does not establish network compatibility. On-chain transfer fees are usually paid in the network's native Gas asset, rather than automatically deducted from USD₮; for example, sending ERC-20 USD₮ on Ethereum requires ETH to pay Gas for transaction execution.

USD₮ on legacy networks no longer has the same issuer support as versions on currently supported networks. Tether's transition arrangements for Omni Layer, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand took effect on September 1, 2025: it no longer directly issues or redeems USD₮ on those chains. An August 2025 update also stated that it would not freeze smart contracts on those networks, so users can still transfer tokens between wallets. Before the change, versions on those networks could fall within Tether's direct issuance and redemption support; afterward, transferability does not mean they can still be directly redeemed with Tether, nor that platforms must continue to support deposits and withdrawals. Tether's terms also provide that if it stops supporting a chain or protocol, holders must take the necessary action to migrate tokens to a supported chain designated by Tether. Therefore, when holding USD₮ on a legacy chain, first confirm platform support and the migration route; do not assume that its usability matches a supported-chain version simply because the name is the same.

USD₮ can be requested for direct redemption with Tether into U.S. dollars, but this is not a channel automatically available to every on-chain holder. An applicant must be a Tether-verified customer and comply with its terms of service and other requirements; subscription or redemption rights are non-transferable contractual rights of that customer. When a redemption is processed, U.S. dollars are paid under Tether's designated process to a bank account in that customer's own name and designated by that customer. Tether's current fees page lists a $100,000 minimum for subscription or redemption, and a fee for each redemption of $1,000 or 0.1% of the redemption amount, whichever is greater. For $100,000, 0.1% is $100, so the $1,000 fee applies under that rule. Verification also requires documents and review by the compliance team, and Tether retains the decision whether to approve an account; the minimum, fees, and eligibility should all be checked against the official terms and fees page at the time of application.

Tether may restrict USD₮-related services or token addresses in circumstances provided in its terms. The terms allow it to suspend its website or services such as subscription and redemption where required by applicable law, where it suspects a breach of the terms, where litigation or an investigation exists, where there is a risk of unauthorized access, or where it considers continued service would create legal liability or unacceptable risk. For uses it considers prohibited, it may also freeze tokens, blacklist addresses, or take other action. This differs from whether a sender can reverse an ordinary on-chain transaction: Tether's terms state that token transactions sent to an on-chain address are irreversible. However, if an address or service layer is restricted, tokens in the affected address may still be unable to transfer, and the holder may be unable to use issuer services such as direct subscription or redemption. USD₮ availability is therefore affected at the same time by private-key control, the selected network, and the issuer's compliance controls.
