South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the evening of March 20 that the South Korean government has decided to join the "Joint Statement on the Strait of Hormuz" issued by seven countries including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, and Canada. South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that this decision took into comprehensive consideration South Korea's basic position on the safety of international maritime passages and freedom of navigation, international developments, as well as the direct impact on South Korea's energy supply and economy caused by disrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. On March 19, seven countries including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, and Canada issued a joint statement condemning Iran's de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
