Yet in the end, as the Fed and Waller effects finally land, the short side laughs last again! This July, everyone,辛苦了. The ending didn’t disappoint you: friends who followed OpenAI/“Ohtman” to short have made profits! August is the time when the short side gains momentum. Hope you all make good use of it! In our crypto sector, it has always been the most sensitive investment area. However in the second half of July, it didn’t move in the opposite direction; instead, we saw a landscape of bad news turning into good news for shorts, bad news into upswings, and bad news turning into downtrends—showing that the market is being controlled and that institutions also have different views on long vs. short! Currently, the market is mainly influenced by five parts: 1. The Middle East situation 2. The Fed’s hawk/dove stance and rate-hike/cut expectations 3. ETF on-chain capital inflows and outflows 4. The spillover from U.S. and Japan/Korea stock markets 5. Whale holdings by institutions like MicroStrategy and BlackRock I think the biggest impact among the above is still the expectations for rate hikes and cuts. Everything else can only affect up/down moves in a one-off, one-sided way. On the Middle East issue, for months it’s been back-and-forth: you say your thing, I hit mine—talks, negotiations, and fighting are expected to keep going and likely won’t stop anytime soon. Second, the hawkish remarks Waller made in the press conference are also gradually brewing in the market. As for ETFs, there was massive outflow at month-end; recently we saw large single-day ETF net outflows, suggesting some institutions took profits in the short term. The U.S. and Japan/Korea stock markets are facing a breakdown, and institutions are holding both long and short positions. Overall, the signs suggest that the financial markets have a very bad atmosphere. If you pull one string, everything moves. A crypto crash that’s caused by inevitability is bound to trigger a landslide and a tidal wave. August, as always, is a typically weaker seasonal month for Bitcoin. Recently, the rebound’s trading volume has continued to shrink—insufficient upside momentum. 67,000 couldn’t break through, so you can’t see new highs. At the same time, it also stages that the rebound is over! However, what can truly open the market is next week’s data! Ahead of non-farm payrolls, it’s expected to be mostly range-bound and choppy. The market will keep battling it out between ADP and PMI data, and it’s very common to see needle-like moves back and forth. The real tipping point is Friday’s NFP: after the World Cup ends. Whether it can be resolved on the employment front remains uncertain. Once NFP weakens and wage-down expectations heat up, the bulls will take the upper hand, and two straight months of NFP tailwinds would be able to break upward out of the range. But if NFP is strong and wages stay high, then bearish sentiment will ferment, and the shorts will make a major breakout, leading to a sharp weakening! With hawkish officials’ views like Waller’s being supported, the market is pushing back rate-cut expectations. Personally, I still lean toward the latter. Overall, I’m still more biased toward the rate-hike scenario. Whether in terms of technical structure or the broader backdrop, it’s all a big bearish sector. So throughout August, we will continue to firmly hold the short-side expectations, be patient and wait for the wind to blow in.
