The ColdCard incident from yesterday, which led to the theft of more than 1,000 Bitcoins, made me think a lot after reading hundreds of articles and analyses about the topic of cold storage. A naïve mistake by a specialized cold-storage hardware company caused many people who followed the correct steps to regret it—because the company’s Entropy (randomness in word selection) was weak. Cold storage isn’t for everyone. It’s only for people who have the time, expertise, and commitment to take full care of it—and to go through the learning thoroughly. And even specialists should know that using cold storage in a single wallet is wrong. It’s better to diversify across several different methods (a cold wallet, a trusted platform, maybe IBIT). For individuals who only want the price of Bitcoin to rise and whose perspective is purely investment-focused, the two best options are: ١. A reputable platform that stores Bitcoin securely and cannot be hacked or stolen. Binance does not disclose its cold storage ratio, while you have Ren that stores 98% in cold storage—and they take responsibility for you. If, God forbid, Binance gets hacked, you’ll know the value of that portion. But if the platform tells you it stores in cold storage via Multisig—and here I’m talking about storage, not buying or trading. The advantage of this option is that you feel a sense of ownership of your Bitcoin. ٢. Buying a Bitcoin fund like IBIT or MSBT is a safe and convenient option, but you don’t feel the value of Bitcoin—or its number. This option is suitable for those who don’t understand Bitcoin well, or for those who can’t buy directly. Because many people only want to invest, not the real feeling of owning Bitcoin—which I consider one of the 10 best things in the universe. Remember: what I’m saying doesn’t reduce the value of cold storage. But yesterday’s lesson teaches us that we shouldn’t trust 100% in companies that make cold-wallet devices. And when it comes to Multisig, or improving quality through a Dice Roll—unfortunately, only 1% of users have the patience to do it, and not everyone will. Also important: if your amount exceeds 15,000 USD or 0.25 Bitcoin, you should think about not keeping them all in the same place and start being more careful with them. The Bitcoin community should understand that most people who read this are exactly those people—so the message should be logical in terms of expectations. Don’t assume everyone will keep it in cold storage. Most important message: There is no perfect way to store Bitcoin. Every method has its own advantages and risks. For most people, the best choice is the solution they can use safely and keep using—while diversifying storage methods and not relying on a single party.
