Vanguard xStock (VTIX) Price

Vanguard xStock (VTIx) is a tokenized tracker certificate issued by Backed Assets (JE) Limited, issued as Solana SPL and ERC-20 tokens, with the objective of tracking the price of the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI). It is not an ETF fund share issued by Vanguard, and holding VTIx should not be directly equated with holding VTI. “Tracking” means that the product aims to reflect the price of the underlying asset; it does not mean that the token and the underlying fund shares are identical in legal rights, issuer, investor eligibility, or trading channels. The product page explicitly lists Backed Assets (JE) Limited as the issuer of VTIx and Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund as the issuer of VTI.

VTIx tracks the price of the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (ticker: VTI). The product page states that VTI’s investment objective is to track the CRSP U.S. Total Market Index, which covers nearly all publicly traded U.S. companies across all sectors and large-, mid-, small-, and micro-capitalization companies. Therefore, VTIx tracks the price of a U.S. total-market ETF rather than the stock of a single company. The underlying ETF’s price may be affected by factors including the overall performance of the U.S. stocks it holds; VTIx’s product structure, available networks, trading liquidity, and applicable restrictions are a separate set of factors that need to be understood independently.

VTIx is issued by Backed Assets (JE) Limited. Backed defines xStocks as tokenized tracker certificates that track the value of publicly traded stocks and ETFs; the product page also lists Backed Finance AG as the tokenization service provider. The issuer differs from the underlying issuer: VTI is issued by Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund. Distinguishing the two is important because VTIx’s issuance, product documentation, eligibility restrictions, and redemption arrangements are determined by the Backed product structure, rather than directly by the rules for purchasing VTI fund shares.

The product page lists VTIx as an ERC-20 and Solana SPL token. ERC-20 can be used in Ethereum and compatible EVM network environments; SPL is Solana’s token standard. Before sending, receiving, or using VTIx, it is necessary to confirm that the chain, wallet, and receiving address support the same network and the same token standard. Operations involving an asset of the same name on different chains are not interchangeable: sending SPL tokens to an address that supports only ERC-20, or doing the reverse, may result in assets that cannot be normally recovered. Network compatibility is a condition of on-chain interaction and does not change VTIx’s product nature as a tracker certificate rather than VTI shares.

The management fee listed on the product page is 0.03% per year, and this figure reflects the ongoing cost charged by the underlying fund manager over the past year; issuance/redemption fees may be up to 0.50% of the investment amount when entering or exiting an investment. The two use different charging bases: the former is an ongoing annual cost, while the latter is related to the amount entering or exiting. For example, using a hypothetical amount of $10,000, the 0.50% fee cap corresponds to a maximum one-time issuance or redemption fee of $50; a 0.03% annual fee corresponds to an ongoing cost of approximately $3 over one year. This example is only intended to illustrate the calculation basis and does not include on-chain network fees, trading platform fees, price changes, or other possible costs.

Backed states that each unit of xStock is fully collateralized 1:1 by the corresponding underlying stock or ETF and issued in a bankruptcy-remote structure. For VTIx, the “corresponding underlying asset” is VTI; this arrangement is intended to provide corresponding underlying-asset backing for the tracker certificate. The collateral arrangement does not mean that VTIx’s market trading price is always exactly the same as VTI’s, nor does it mean that principal cannot be lost. The token’s secondary-market price may also be affected by liquidity, trading conditions, and product availability; the issuer also warns that investment value may fluctuate substantially and that, in some circumstances, the original investment amount may not be recoverable.

VTIx is not directly offered to all regions and all investors. Backed’s page states that its tokenized financial assets are not directly offered to the public; direct purchasers must meet “qualified investor” requirements and obtain them through a licensed entity. U.S. persons and related persons located in the United States are restricted, and the offering arrangement described on the product page does not apply to UK clients. Therefore, “being able to see or transfer a token on a certain chain” and “being eligible to purchase or redeem from the issuer” are different questions. Whether purchase, holding, transfer, and redemption are permitted also depends on the laws of the relevant location, product documentation, and the service provider’s eligibility review.

VTIx issuance/redemption and secondary-market trading need to be considered separately. The issuer’s page lists issuance/redemption fees that may be charged when entering or exiting an investment and states that users intending to redeem the issuer’s tokenized financial assets should use its redemption channel; meanwhile, xStocks can be transferred across multiple blockchains. An on-chain transfer merely moves the token between addresses; it does not automatically constitute redemption with the issuer or acquisition of underlying VTI shares. Whether issuance or redemption is available is subject to the issuer’s eligibility, jurisdictional, and product-documentation conditions; secondary-market execution prices may also differ from the underlying price.

VTIx aims to track VTI’s price, but the two are not the same security. VTI is an ETF issued by Vanguard that tracks the CRSP U.S. Total Market Index; VTIx is a tracker certificate issued by Backed Assets (JE) Limited and exists in the form of a blockchain token. This difference affects the product documentation, issuance and redemption routes, eligibility restrictions, and on-chain operational requirements that investors actually face. Understanding VTI’s index exposure is not sufficient to understand VTIx; the issuance structure and availability restrictions of the tracker certificate must also be understood.

VTIx has two layers of value linkage. The first is that the issuer collateralizes it 1:1 with corresponding VTI and designs the product to track VTI’s price; the second is that the token itself can be transferred on supported blockchains and integrated into wallets, trading venues, or protocols. The former establishes the underlying-price linkage, while the latter determines the token’s technical mode of use. These two layers do not guarantee that prices will be exactly the same in real time. Changes in the underlying price, secondary-market liquidity, network costs, transferability restrictions, or issuance/redemption eligibility may all affect the outcome when a user actually trades or exits.

Before using VTIx, at least three conditions need to be confirmed: whether product eligibility and the relevant jurisdiction permit it, whether the network used matches the token standard, and whether the operation is an on-chain transfer or issuance/redemption with the issuer. These respectively determine legal availability, technical executability, and product process; one cannot substitute for the other two.

VTIx’s costs are not limited to the management fee and issuance/redemption fees listed on the product page. When transferring ERC-20 or SPL tokens on-chain, users may also need to bear the transaction fees of the corresponding network; if buying or selling through a trading venue, that venue’s trading costs may also apply. The product page’s 0.03% annual fee and issuance/redemption fee of up to 0.50% cannot replace the calculation of these external costs.
