DEGEN is an ERC-20 token originally issued on Base and originating from Farcaster’s Degen community; this FAQ refers to the asset represented by the Base contract 0x4ed4E862860beD51a9570b96d89aF5E1B0Efefed. Its verifiable core use case is tipping community creators, rather than serving as Base’s native Gas or staking asset. DEGEN was also once the native Gas token of Degen Chain, but that standalone L3 shut down on August 31, 2026. Therefore, holding a DEGEN balance on Base does not mean that transactions can still be initiated on Degen Chain, and a Base balance should not be confused with the status of assets on the former L3.

How did DEGEN previously pay fees on Degen Chain, and what is its current status?

While Degen Chain was operating, DEGEN was the native Gas used by users to pay that chain’s transaction fees. Sending assets or calling contracts consumed execution resources; transactions were handled by a sequencer, users paid fees calculated under the chain’s rules in DEGEN, and batches were then settled to Base. This is a historical mechanism, not an operation that can currently be performed: Degen Chain has shut down, so transactions can no longer be initiated or Gas paid on that L3. Transferring DEGEN on Base is different: it is an ERC-20 transfer on Base, and the required network fee is determined by Base’s fee mechanism; it is not the same as using DEGEN on the closed Degen Chain.

How can you support Farcaster creators with DEGEN through likes?

The Degen Mini App is designed to turn Farcaster “likes” into predefined DEGEN tips: users connect a wallet, deposit DEGEN, set a total budget and the tip amount per like, and, after liking through a Farcaster client, the preset amount is transferred to the post author’s wallet. The minimum tip per interaction is 1 DEGEN. The total budget is a hard limit on automated tipping: once cumulative transfers reach the budget, the function pauses, and subsequent likes do not transfer more tokens. Therefore, the tip amount per interaction determines the amount sent each time, while the budget determines when this automated behavior stops.

What are DEGEN’s initial allocation and subsequent supply rules?

DEGEN’s initial minted supply was 36,965,935,954 tokens, or approximately 36.965935954 billion tokens. In the initial allocation, Airdrop 1, Airdrop 2, and Airdrop 3 accounted for 15%, 20%, and 25%, respectively, totaling 60%; the ecosystem fund accounted for 15%, the liquidity pool for 15%, and liquidity mining for 10%. These percentages describe the use allocations at the time of the initial mint and cannot directly establish that all portions entered the tradable market at the same time. That initial minted amount is also not a fixed maximum supply. A white paper disclosed in 2025 stated that 1% annual inflation was planned from 2028; if the plan is implemented as disclosed, total supply will increase each year. Such new issuance differs from already minted tokens being transferred out of allocation addresses, unlocked, or circulating in the market.

How should DEGEN’s cross-chain design be understood after Degen Chain’s shutdown?

The white paper described DEGEN as using the LayerZero OFT mechanism to transfer across multiple networks, with consistency of total supply across networks as a design goal. This mechanism does not directly copy the same Base-contract balance to another chain; it uses cross-chain messages and corresponding token handling at both ends to make the asset available on the destination network. However, a historical cross-chain design does not mean that a migration route for the former Degen Chain is still available. The chain’s shutdown notice explicitly states that the network itself has closed and that no migration path exists; it instructed users of the former chain to bridge assets out before the deadline. A token’s name, ticker, or old OFT description alone cannot now support an assumption that a particular network, bridge route, or former L3 balance remains operable.

After Degen Chain’s shutdown, what should be noted separately for former L3 assets and DEGEN on Base?

For Degen Chain while it was still operating, risks mainly arose from its sequencing, data-availability, and bridging stages: transactions first received sequencer processing, then batches were settled to Base; the AnyTrust architecture relied on a data availability committee and on the security assumption that at least one honest participant could raise a challenge. A rapid processing result and final submission to Base were not the same stage. These are historical architectural risks and should not be taken to mean the network remains usable. The more important current fact is that Degen Chain has shut down and has no migration path; assets on the former L3 that were not handled before shutdown cannot be treated as balances that can continue to be transferred or used to pay Gas through that network. For operations involving DEGEN on Base, users should verify the Base network, contract address, and the Base network fees required by their wallet.
