Chainalysis Launches Asset Seizure Certification to Aid Law Enforcement in Tackling Crypto Crime

Chainalysis introduces the Asset Seizure Certification to equip law enforcement with skills to effectively seize crypto assets, addressing the challenges of modern financial crimes.
Chainalysis has announced the launch of its Asset Seizure Certification (CASC), a program designed to empower law enforcement professionals with the knowledge and tools necessary to effectively seize cryptocurrency assets. This initiative comes in response to the increasing complexity of financial crimes involving digital currencies, as highlighted in their recent crypto crime report, which uncovered $40 billion in illicit activity.
Addressing the Complexity of Crypto Crime
The report illustrates how criminals are leveraging cryptocurrencies to obscure their activities, often moving illicit funds between digital and traditional financial systems. An example of this complexity is Operation Destabilise, where the UK’s National Crime Agency disrupted a Russian money laundering network spanning over 30 countries. This case underscores the need for law enforcement to be adept in tracking and seizing crypto assets.
The Chainalysis Asset Seizure Certification
The CASC program offers a comprehensive curriculum that combines traditional investigative techniques with blockchain expertise. Participants will receive hands-on training with Chainalysis technology, including Reactor and Wallet Scan, to manage recovery seeds and handle evidence efficiently. This training aims to address common challenges faced by investigators, such as limited training opportunities and the complexity of crypto wallets.
Phil Larratt, former Senior Manager at the NCA and Director of Global Services at Chainalysis, emphasized the importance of specialized tools and training, noting that early operations often faced delays due to a lack of resources. The CASC program seeks to mitigate these challenges by providing actionable guidance and practical training.
Real-World Impact and Technological Solutions
Chainalysis has integrated advanced software solutions into the CASC program to aid law enforcement in their investigations. The Chainalysis Reactor allows investigators to trace funds across blockchains, while Wallet Scan automates wallet recovery, streamlining the process of identifying and seizing assets. These tools have already proven effective, with Wallet Scan helping recover significant amounts of previously missed funds.
As governments worldwide introduce new legislation to better manage crypto asset seizures, such as the UK’s recent powers to seize crypto assets used by criminals, the CASC program positions law enforcement to handle these challenges effectively. The program is supported by Chainalysis experts, providing a complete solution for crypto investigations.
Looking Forward
With the growing recognition of cryptocurrency’s role in financial crime, the CASC program aims to build a community of certified professionals equipped to handle crypto seizures. Participants will learn to identify, secure, and manage crypto assets, ensuring best practices are followed during investigations. Chainalysis offers additional support through its Global Services, which provide expert-led solutions for complex investigations.
