The SEC has appointed Kevin Muhlendorf as the new Inspector General.
On June 24, according to the official announcement, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced that Kevin Muhlendorf will officially become the new Inspector General of the agency on July 28. Mr. Muhlendorf has served as a lawyer at the SEC and the Department of Justice, and for the past nine years has been a partner at the Washington, D.C. law firm Wiley Rein LLP, focusing on representing individuals and entities in white collar crime defense and government investigations in criminal and civil securities enforcement cases. Acting Inspector General Katherine Reilly will return to the position of Deputy Inspector General. During his time in private practice, Mr. Muhlendorf often led sensitive internal investigations and provided compliance consulting to clients. From 2023 to 2024, he was assigned to Wiley Rein as the Acting Inspector General of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), leading a team of more than thirty auditors and special investigators to conduct investigations and publish financial and performance audit reports. He also designed and implemented a whistleblower rewards pilot program.
