Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar stated that the tariff negotiations with the United States are progressing smoothly.
Gate News bot news, according to Bloomberg, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim (Amir Hamzah Azizan) stated that negotiations with the United States regarding the drop in tariffs on Southeast Asian countries are progressing smoothly.
Anwar stated that he received letters on Thursday morning from Malaysia's Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Zafrul Aziz, and Second Finance Minister Amir Hamzah Aziz, indicating that the talks with the U.S. Secretary of Commerce were "very smooth."
Anwar stated during a speech in Kuala Lumpur: "Our ministers are discussing this tariff issue with the United States in Washington, D.C."
In April, Malaysia was subjected to a 24% tariff, and then U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 90-day suspension of the tariffs, imposing a 10% tariff on most countries. Malaysia is seeking to reduce U.S. tariffs on industries that are crucial to both economies to below 10%.
Anwar stated that the tariffs imposed by the United States present a "significant challenge" given Malaysia's deep involvement in the global supply chain. He added that approximately 60% of Malaysia's semiconductor products are exported to the United States.
