What is ZK?

Its core role is to participate in ZKsync's on-chain governance, rather than to serve as the general fee asset necessarily required for every transaction on Era. It is important to distinguish ZK from ZKsync Era: Era is a network that uses zero-knowledge rollup technology, while ZK is the token used to govern that ecosystem. Holding ZK does not mean holding equity in entities related to ZKsync, nor does it automatically create yield or redemption rights.

ZKsync Era is a zero-knowledge rollup network. User transactions are first executed on Era and aggregated into batches; the system then submits to Ethereum a zero-knowledge validity proof showing that the batch state transition is valid, and Ethereum verifies that proof. Therefore, Era does not require Ethereum to re-execute every transaction in a batch to verify its validity: Ethereum verifies the proof. Transaction execution and aggregation occur on Era, while Ethereum serves as the final verification and settlement anchor. This also shows that ZK token governance and the network proof process are related but distinct layers.

How are ZK supply, community allocation, and team/investor unlocks arranged?

ZK has a total supply of 21 billion tokens. The token paper allocates approximately two-thirds to the community and approximately one-third to the team and investors; the community airdrop is 17.5% of total supply, or approximately 3.675 billion tokens. The community, team, and investor shares are allocation categories and do not mean all tokens in those categories are freely circulating at the same time. The team and investor portions unlock from June 2024 through June 2028 according to the schedule listed in the paper, so total supply, allocation percentages, and the tradable supply on a given date should be understood separately.

Because both belong to the ZKsync ecosystem, the governance token's voting rights should not be mistaken for direct control over every batch transaction proof.
