Obol (OBOL) Price

OBOL is the coordination asset of the Obol Collective. Its core technical context is distributed validators (DVs), in which multiple operators jointly run an Ethereum proof-of-stake validator; OBOL itself is not used as Ethereum staking collateral or as a block-fee asset. Obol aims to use distributed validator technology (DVT) to reduce the effect that a single machine, operator, or client failure can have on a validator. OBOL is currently described by the project as an asset for coordinating operators, users, and contributors and supporting the long-term development of the DV ecosystem. This means it is connected to that ecosystem, but holding or using OBOL does not automatically provide validator rewards.

Obol’s DVs divide operation of one Ethereum validator among multiple nodes: each operator holds a private-key share rather than the complete validator private key. A validator signature that can be submitted to the Beacon Chain can be formed only when the number of participants required by the cluster’s threshold signs the same duty data. When creating a cluster, participants use distributed key generation (DKG) to jointly produce key shares, validator deposit data, and exit data. A key feature of this design is that it avoids having a trusted intermediary first create and then split a complete private key, and ensures that the complete private key is never constructed at any point. When an attestation or block-proposal duty arrives, Charon sits between the validator client and the consensus node: it obtains the duty data to be signed and reaches consensus on the same data with other Charon nodes; the validator clients then generate partial signatures using their respective shares, and Charon aggregates the threshold number of partial signatures and broadcasts them. The threshold determines whether duties can still be performed during failures; it does not mean that more nodes are necessarily safer. For example, a 4-node cluster requires 3 of 4 nodes to be online and honest, while a 6-node cluster requires 4 of 6. In the official examples, the former can tolerate one malicious node, while the latter can tolerate two nodes being offline. If the applicable threshold is not met, the cluster cannot form a valid signature. Running the same Charon node repeatedly is also treated as Byzantine behavior and cannot be used as ordinary redundancy.

OBOL’s historical governance mechanism allowed token holders to delegate voting power to representatives, who could participate in proposals, voting, and funding allocation. However, the current official governance page explicitly states that governance is paused and is in a transition and redesign phase. Therefore, historical delegation, voting, or RAF mechanisms should not be treated as currently guaranteed, available token-holder rights. The pause does not erase historical records: previous OIPs, votes, and discussions remain available for review. However, the official explanation says that reasons for the pause include low participation, quorum risk, reliance on a small number of active delegates, and a gap between formal voting and actual execution. The subsequent model is still being designed and may redefine the role of token holders and the balance among decision-making structure, execution, and oversight. Holding OBOL itself does not mean that a holder automatically obtains enforceable voting or funding-allocation rights during the pause.

Staking OBOL currently does not generate new staking incentives or additional token issuance. The official position is that staking is no longer actively promoted as a core token utility. This changes the status of future rewards; it does not make old contracts or existing positions immediately invalid. Users who already staked through this mechanism and hold stOBOL can maintain their existing positions. To unstake, the official guidance says that users can currently interact directly with the staking contract on-chain at any time. Because a simplified interface is still under development, this action is not completed through a promised new reward process. The existence of stOBOL cannot be used to infer that new OBOL is still continuously accruing, and reward arrangements in older staking documentation should not be treated as the current arrangement.

OBOL has a maximum supply of 500 million tokens, but a supply cap is not the same as immediately circulating supply: different categories become transferable under their respective lockup and unlock schedules, so total supply, allocated supply, and actual circulating supply need to be considered separately. The official allocations are: 38.8% for the ecosystem treasury and retroactive funding (RAF), 23.7% for investors, 19% for the team, 7.5% for community incentives, 7.5% for the airdrop, and 3.6% for the CoinList public sale. These percentages describe supply ownership and intended use; they do not mean that every category is tradable at the same time. The ecosystem treasury and RAF are used for grants, incentives, and retroactive rewards for ecosystem contributions, while investors and the team are subject to lockup arrangements.

OBOL’s tradable supply changes as allocation categories unlock. Therefore, the 500 million token cap cannot be directly treated as the market circulating supply at a given time. The official documentation explicitly states that the full supply will not circulate immediately; it will unlock gradually under a structured schedule over months and years. The public-sale category has particularly explicit rules: the CoinList public sale represents 3.6% of total supply, with 50% of purchased tokens fully unlocked and transferable at TGE and the remaining 50% unlocking linearly over the following 12 months. Here, “linear unlocking” means that the remaining portion is released gradually over time, rather than being released all at once in month 12. This rule applies only to this public-sale category and cannot be extrapolated as a uniform unlock rule for all OBOL allocation categories.

To identify the asset, use the complete contract address rather than relying only on the name “OBOL,” the token symbol, or an icon. Before transferring, approving, or interacting with a contract, verify character by character that the network and contract address match the official page. Tokens with the same name or a similar symbol do not become official OBOL merely because their names are the same. This verification can only confirm that the compared contract is the officially published token contract; it cannot replace independent confirmation of transaction parameters, approval amounts, or third-party contract risks.
