Its direct function is to obtain voting power by locking it, thereby participating in the allocation of resources for the DAO's mission, values, operations, and supported projects; it does not represent a share of DAO assets, and official documents explicitly do not describe it as a token with an expectation of profit. Therefore, MOONEY's governance use is not equivalent to corporate equity or pro rata ownership of DAO treasury assets. Holding tokens and obtaining voting power are two separate steps: only vMOONEY formed after locking enters the voting-power calculation.

Available lock durations range from one week to four years, and locked MOONEY cannot be freely used before the unlock expires. vMOONEY is proportional to the locked amount and remaining lock time: for the same number of tokens, a longer remaining lock period produces more vMOONEY; as the unlock date approaches, the remaining term shortens and the related basis for voting power also changes. This design links voting influence to tokens that remain within their commitment period, rather than calculating it solely from wallet balances.

MoonDAO's voting-power formula is: Voting power = √vMOONEY. Here, vMOONEY is a locked voting credential determined jointly by the locked amount and the remaining lock time; it is not a simple balance of unlocked MOONEY. The square root causes voting power to grow at a decreasing rate as vMOONEY increases. For example, 10,000 vMOONEY corresponds to 100 votes of weight, while 1,000,000 vMOONEY corresponds to 1,000 votes of weight; the latter has 100 times the vMOONEY of the former but only 10 times the voting power. It reduces the linear amplification of weight by large vMOONEY holdings, but does not mean that all participants have exactly the same influence.

How do MoonDAO proposals pass?

MoonDAO's public process is as follows: anyone may first initiate proposal discussion in Discord's ideation channel; vMOONEY holders then submit according to the template, and only after review and approval by the MoonDAO Senate is the proposal put to a vote by members with voting rights. In other words, putting forward an idea, completing review, and entering an on-chain or community vote are not the same stage. For binary proposals, affirmative votes must exceed 66.6% of all voting power to pass. Actual voting power is calculated from the square root of vMOONEY, so reaching the threshold depends on the vMOONEY formed through participants' locks and their remaining lock times, not merely on the number of participants or the nominal amount of MOONEY.

MOONEY's supply is officially described as fixed, with no further minting; this means subsequent project incentives come from existing arrangements rather than unlimited additional issuance. Because the current token page and earlier governance documents state different precise total-supply figures, supply should be understood using the consistently confirmable conclusion of “fixed, with no further minting,” rather than treating one figure from different versions as the current circulating supply. The project-system rewards use geometric decline: 15 million MOONEY is allocated in the first quarter, followed by 95% of the preceding quarter each quarter, namely 15 million, 14.25 million, 13.5375 million, and so on; earlier governance documents describe the total of this infinite geometric series as 300 million MOONEY. How rewards are allocated among projects is determined by DAO-member voting or the governance mechanism selected at the time.

This means receiving a project reward does not mean immediately receiving freely transferable MOONEY: the reward is first reflected in a governance-related locked state and is subject to transfer restrictions during the four-year lock period. This arrangement connects contributor incentives with long-term governance commitments. The quarterly total for rewards declines quarter by quarter, while the proportion an individual project can receive must also be determined through governance; therefore, the first-quarter total, a project's final allocation, and the number of tokens a holder can use immediately should not be treated as the same metric.

On which networks can MOONEY be used?

MOONEY is officially listed as usable on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon, and Base. Before transferring across networks, buying, or locking it, you must first confirm the official MOONEY contract for the chosen network and that network's Gas asset; the same token symbol appearing on an incorrect network or a non-official contract does not automatically represent MoonDAO's MOONEY. Multi-chain availability expands the network environments in which the token exists, but does not bypass governance locking rules: to obtain voting power, MOONEY must still be locked through the relevant process to obtain vMOONEY. Transferring available balances, locking tokens, and exercising voting power should each be confirmed separately for their network and contract status.
