Linea is a public, permissionless zkEVM Layer 2 network built on Ethereum: it executes Ethereum-compatible transactions on L2, generates zero-knowledge proofs of execution correctness, and finalizes its state on Ethereum. Therefore, understanding LINEA first requires distinguishing the network from the token: Linea provides the environment for transaction execution, contract operation, and asset bridging; LINEA is designed to incentivize the ecosystem, fund builders and public goods, and does not replace ETH as the network's gas asset.

Do I need LINEA to pay gas on Linea, and how are fees ultimately handled?

Gas for transactions on Linea is paid in ETH; holding LINEA is neither required nor sufficient to pay network fees. When users send a transfer or call a contract on Linea, they pay gas denominated in ETH. Fees are not determined solely by the “network fee rate” of a single operation: Linea collects gas paid by users in ETH, then first covers costs such as submitting data to Ethereum, finalizing zero-knowledge proofs, bridging, and off-chain infrastructure. Only if a surplus remains after these costs does it enter the ETH and LINEA burn process. Therefore, LINEA is not a gas token, nor does it inherently entitle holders to a share of fee revenue.

LINEA has a genesis supply of 72,009,990,000 tokens, which is also its maximum supply. Of this, 85% is allocated to the community and ecosystem: 75% goes to a long-term ecosystem fund and 10% to early contributors; the remaining 15% is held in the Consensys treasury. Official materials state that there is no allocation for private investors, insiders, employees, or team members. Of the 10% allocated to early contributors, 9% is for user airdrops and 1% is for strategic builders; tokens already distributed through airdrops are fully unlocked. The 75% ecosystem fund is managed by the Linea Consortium and may be used for shared infrastructure, public goods, and collaborative development, including Ethereum research and development, audits, and developer tools; this does not mean that all 85% will enter the market at the same time.

At TGE, only 22% of LINEA's supply entered circulation, comprising user and builder airdrops, ecosystem activation, and DEX liquidity; the remaining allocations were still locked at that time or vested gradually under their respective schedules. Therefore, total supply, unlocked amount, and actual circulating supply are different measures. The long-term ecosystem fund accounts for 75% of total supply and unlocks over ten years: the annual unlock percentage is higher in the earlier years, at approximately 10%, and gradually declines to 2% in the tenth year. The 15% Consensys treasury allocation is non-transferable for five years, until its vesting arrangement is complete. The amount tradable at any future point will also be affected by actual fund distributions, vesting, and tokens already burned, so it cannot be calculated solely from 85% or 15%.

How does Linea's dual ETH and LINEA burn mechanism work?

Linea burns only revenue surplus after infrastructure costs are deducted: 20% is burned directly as ETH, while 80% is first converted into LINEA and then burned. This means that increased transaction volume does not automatically produce an equal amount of burns; if revenue is insufficient to cover incurred or accumulated infrastructure costs, there is no surplus available to burn. The process is as follows: users pay gas in ETH, which enters the revenue vault; the vault first pays for L1 data submission, proof finalization, bridging, and off-chain operations; 20% of the surplus is sent to a zero address and burned. The remaining 80% is exchanged for LINEA on Linea through a DEX at a price protected against slippage, then transferred to Ethereum L1 through the native bridge and burned there, because LINEA supply is accounted for on L1. A service operated by the Linea Consortium periodically triggers the operations, while the final L1 burn step is designed to be triggerable by anyone.

Can bridging ETH or holding LINEA directly earn Yield Boost yield?

Accepted Answer

No. Yield Boost is not a yield product that directly credits every LINEA holder or every address that has bridged ETH. It stakes, on Ethereum L1, ETH in the native bridge's LineaRollup contract that exceeds the withdrawal liquidity reserve; net staking yield after system obligations is periodically reported by off-chain automated services and unlocked on L2 for designated ecosystem incentive mechanisms. Users on Linea generally still hold 1:1 ETH rather than automatically receiving stETH or a re-staked balance; only users participating in specific incentive programs funded by these yields may receive incentives according to the program's rules. This feature went live on mainnet with Beta v5.1 in March 2026, but official materials still label it as a phased rollout, and some components may not yet be enabled. If the bridge contract's liquid ETH reserve is temporarily insufficient, users can wait for staked ETH to return or choose to withdraw stETH; the waiting time for the former is affected by the Ethereum validator exit queue.

When transferring ETH or ERC-20 tokens into or out of Linea through the native bridge, first select the L1→L2 or L2→L1 direction and the asset; bridging an ERC-20 for the first time usually also requires approving the bridge contract on the source chain before confirming the bridge transaction. The native bridge does not automatically deliver assets in all cases: transfers from Linea back to Ethereum, and any native bridge transfer involving USDC, require manual claiming on the destination chain. Manual claiming involves two transactions: a cross-chain message is initiated on the source chain, and the recipient then pays gas on the destination chain to execute the claim; assets become available only after the second transaction is completed. Official estimated native-bridge times are approximately 20 minutes for ordinary ETH/ERC-20 transfers from L1 to L2 and two to twelve hours from L2 to L1; USDC uses CCTP, with the standard path estimated at approximately thirteen to nineteen minutes from L1 to L2 and two to twelve hours from L2 to L1, while the fast path is expected to take approximately twenty seconds and eight seconds, respectively. These are estimates, not guaranteed delivery times.

The key changes from 2025 to 2026 were that Linea first progressively brought Ethereum EVM upgrades into the network, then launched functions directly related to asset utilization and tokenomics. On November 5, 2025, Beta v4.2 added LINEA to the burn mechanism; this moved the prior fee design from planning for fee handling alone into implementation of dual ETH/LINEA burns. Beta v4.4 then upgraded mainnet to Fusaka on December 3, 2025; it followed the Paris, Shanghai, Cancun, and Prague upgrades that were completed in phases in October 2025. Fusaka brought Linea in line with the latest Ethereum EVM upgrade at that time; EIP-7702 was not enabled in this step, but was instead introduced in Beta v5.0 on March 23, 2026.
