What is Grass, and what problem does the network aim to solve?

Grass is a network that lets users share unused internet bandwidth after they consent. Its goal is not to sell content on users’ devices, but to use the network egress access that nodes can provide to access public web content, then process that public web data into structured data for AI and businesses. After a participant installs the Grass app and connects to the network, the device becomes a node; the network’s routing and verification components work with nodes to process traffic and verify bandwidth contributions. Users can view their connection and points in the app, and can pause or disconnect sharing.

How does Grass use a node’s unused bandwidth?

Grass’s bandwidth-use process works as follows: the client initiates a web request, and a verification component instructs a node to handle it. After receiving an encrypted packet containing the destination address, the node first verifies through the relevant parties’ digital signatures whether the request is legitimate, then forwards it to the public website and returns the encrypted website response to the designated router. A node therefore provides an egress point to the internet and relays requests and responses; it does not let Grass read private files or browsing history on the device. Encryption and signatures throughout the complete path are intended to reduce the risk of content tampering and allow verification components to record a node’s service quality and contribution. The actual traffic a node receives is also affected by its reputation score and demand in its location.

How are Grass Points calculated, and how does being online differ from actual bandwidth use?

Grass Points record network contributions and are used to calculate later rewards; they are not GRASS tokens themselves. Since Epoch 11 of Stage 2, points have been divided into Uptime Points and Network Points. The former measure the time a device stays connected and available to the network, and may also come from eligible referrals or milestone rewards; the latter arise only when the network actually uses that connection to complete web-data requests. Network Points have a fixed daily pool of 1,000,000 points. If a node’s actual bandwidth carried that day represents p of the bandwidth used network-wide for this allocation, its theoretical share is approximately 1,000,000 × p; this shows that the result depends on its share of actual use, not only its online time. Regional demand for requests, connection stability and availability, and the network’s scheduling of different connections to maintain reliability can all affect whether a node is used. Referral commissions count only toward Uptime Points: first-, second-, and third-level referrals receive 20%, 10%, and 5%, respectively, of the referred user’s Uptime Points. They neither generate nor alter Network Points. Staying online can therefore accumulate availability contributions, but does not guarantee that bandwidth will actually be used or that a particular reward amount will be received.

How are GRASS and rewards for running a node related?

GRASS is the native token of the Grass Network; it is distinct from token rewards that users may receive for participating in the network by sharing unused bandwidth. Eligibility for a particular distribution of network contributions depends on that distribution’s points, participation period, and eligibility rules; merely holding GRASS does not automatically confer eligibility. GRASS holders can also delegate tokens to an Available Router listed officially by Grass under the current Staking Program. After a router receives Staking Rewards, its operator first takes a portion at the commission rate displayed for that router, and the remainder is distributed in proportion to each delegator’s staked amount with that router. This is neither a fixed nor guaranteed return, and rewards are not automatically compounded.

Why are Stage 2 rewards paid in USDC, and do they change the GRASS supply?

Accepted Answer

Stage 2 reward distributions are provided in USDC, rather than newly issued GRASS. The stated reasons are ongoing regulatory uncertainty and enabling all users in eligible jurisdictions to claim rewards promptly; this choice of payment asset therefore does not mean that GRASS is used or can be used for that distribution. The distribution covers bandwidth-sharing participation from Epochs 1 through 19 of Stage 2, from October 14, 2024 to June 8, 2026. It does not add to GRASS issuance or alter its circulating supply, and holding or having held GRASS does not affect this distribution. Participants must have earned more than 0 Network Points during that period and meet eligibility conditions such as those relating to jurisdiction under the rewards program. Claims open at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time on July 22, 2026 and close on January 22, 2027; claims should be made only through the official Dashboard.

How are rewards earned and retrieved after delegating GRASS for staking?

Under the current staking program, delegating GRASS does not put the tokens in Grass custody; delegation locks them at the selected Available Router. Each wallet address may delegate to up to 20 Available Routers at the same time. Third-party routers must be approved in advance by Grass, but Grass does not guarantee their commission rates or their distributions to delegators. Once an unstaking request is initiated, it cannot be revoked. Tokens and related earned rewards remain locked at the router for seven days and cannot be accessed or transferred during that period; rewards not granted before the unstaking request is submitted are forfeited. Grass may adjust the seven-day period, and users bear Solana network transaction fees for every delegation, claim, compounding action, or unstaking action.

Will running a Grass node access my personal data?

According to Grass, nodes forward network traffic to public websites; Grass states that it does not view users’ ongoing activity or access personal data on their devices. On installation, the app asks users to consent to sharing unused bandwidth, and users can pause sharing at any time. This defines the data-access boundary claimed for the Grass service; it does not mean that users need not assess whether their network environment is suitable for running a node. Reward eligibility is also affected by connection quality, geographic location, actual bandwidth use, and program eligibility conditions; using a VPN to circumvent geographic restrictions may result in permanent loss of reward eligibility.

Do Grass Points, GRASS holdings, and staking yield amount to fixed returns?

Accepted Answer

Contribution points earned from running a node do not guarantee GRASS, USDC, or a fixed amount. The rewards program sets a participation period, eligibility, and calculation conditions for every Distribution; points record contributions, while the ultimately claimable asset, amount, and claim conditions depend on the rules for the relevant distribution. For example, Stage 2 requires participants to have earned more than 0 Network Points in the specified period and not be a restricted person. Staking rewards, by contrast, depend on the rewards received by the delegated router, that router’s commission, and the relative staked amounts of all delegators. The two mechanisms use different calculation subjects and eligibility conditions, so a Points balance, GRASS holdings, or a displayed APR cannot be treated as a promise of future returns.
