crvUSD (CRVUSD) Price

crvUSD is a decentralized USD stablecoin in the Curve ecosystem that aims to keep its market price operating as close as possible to $1. It is an ERC-20 token primarily used for crypto-collateralized lending markets and related liquidity scenarios; “stablecoin” describes its peg target and does not mean its price can never deviate from $1 under any circumstances. The system separates borrowing, collateral-risk handling, interest rates, and peg adjustment across different contracts: the Controller manages loans and debt, LLAMMA rebalances collateral, the monetary policy contract determines market interest rates, and PegKeeper helps adjust the peg through designated liquidity pools.

crvUSD is created through overcollateralized borrowing: a user first deposits crypto collateral accepted by an approved market into that market, then establishes a loan with the Controller contract and borrows crvUSD. Depositing collateral does not automatically make it borrowable; available markets and their collateral assets must be approved by Curve DAO, and positions remain continually affected by collateral prices and market rules. The Controller stores users' debt information and serves as the entry point for creating loans, managing positions, and external liquidation. The system can pre-mint and allocate crvUSD to a Controller for borrowing, so it is necessary to distinguish between “tokens that have been minted and allocated to a contract” and “tokens that users have borrowed and that have entered usable circulation.” When borrowers repay debt, the debt in their positions decreases accordingly.

LLAMMA is the automated market maker contract in each crvUSD collateralized lending market. It rebalances collateral between the collateral asset and crvUSD and performs collateral liquidation functions. It is not an ordinary trading pool independent of a borrowing position: its role is directly connected to how a position is handled when collateral value changes. When collateral prices move unfavorably, LLAMMA's rebalancing mechanism begins processing collateral assets rather than leaving the risk change to be handled only at a single point in time. Actual outcomes still depend on the price path, position size, collateral, and market liquidity; therefore, LLAMMA aims to make the liquidation process smoother, but does not eliminate the risks of falling collateral prices, collateral conversion, or position losses.

PegKeeper helps bring crvUSD's price back near $1 by depositing into or withdrawing from its associated crvUSD–another redeemable USD stablecoin liquidity pool. When crvUSD is above $1, PegKeeper deposits crvUSD into the associated pool, increasing the pool's crvUSD balance and thereby creating downward price pressure. When crvUSD is below $1, PegKeeper can burn LP tokens received from prior deposits and withdraw crvUSD from the pool, reducing the pool's crvUSD balance and creating upward adjustment pressure. The latter step is conditional on having previously made deposits and holding LP tokens; any external account or contract can call the update function that performs deposits and withdrawals, and the protocol incentivizes execution with caller rewards. This mechanism is a peg-adjustment tool, not an unconditional guarantee of a $1 price.

Not all pre-minted crvUSD held by PegKeeper should be treated as circulating supply. PegKeeper is allocated pre-minted balances to carry out adjustments when the price deviates; before those tokens are deposited into any associated liquidity pool, the official mechanism documentation counts them as non-circulating. Only when PegKeeper deposits crvUSD into a pool while the price is above the peg does that balance enter that pool's liquidity. Its corresponding LP position then gives PegKeeper the condition to withdraw crvUSD when the price is below the peg. Therefore, when assessing supply or circulation, it is necessary to distinguish between balances borrowed by borrowers, PegKeeper balances that have entered liquidity pools, and pre-minted balances still retained by PegKeeper for adjustment.

crvUSD borrowing interest rates are determined by the system's monetary policy contract rather than set independently by an individual borrower. Interest rates affect the cost for borrowers to maintain debt and are therefore also part of the lending market's supply-and-demand and peg-adjustment system. Official documentation states that the proportion of PegKeeper debt to total debt (DebtFraction) affects interest rates: the higher the proportion of debt accumulated by PegKeepers, the lower the interest rate. This ratio can be understood as PegKeeperDebt ÷ TotalDebt; it describes only one variable in the protocol's interest-rate mechanism and cannot by itself predict a particular user's actual borrowing cost or crvUSD's market price.
