CoW Protocol is a decentralized trading protocol that takes trading intents as input and uses solvers to find execution solutions for orders. Users submit what they want to sell, what they want to buy, and the relevant constraints, rather than having the protocol predefine a single liquidity route. The protocol aggregates multiple orders into batch auctions, where solvers compete to submit execution solutions. Accordingly, CoW Protocol's trading functionality comes from the combination of order aggregation, solving, and settlement; the governance use of the COW token is a separate layer of functionality, and not every trade must use COW.

Q: How does the Fair Combinatorial Batch Auction execute orders?

In each auction round, CoW Protocol first collects and aggregates users' trading intents off-chain, then lets solvers submit quotes. A solver can quote for a single order or submit a batch quote for a group of orders; the latter can combine orders that can be directly exchanged with one another. The protocol excludes “unfair” batch quotes that are worse for any order than the available individual quotes, then selects, subject to computational constraints, the combination of quotes that maximizes the total surplus received by participating orders. In other words, solvers do not merely compete on the price of a single trading pair; they compete on overall execution solutions for a given set of orders.

When an auction round contains orders in opposite directions with matching assets, solvers can match them directly; this is called a Coincidence of Wants (CoW). This allows the relevant portion of the exchange to be completed without using on-chain liquidity. For the same directed asset pair appearing multiple times in the same auction, the protocol uses a uniform directed clearing price: orders in that direction settle at a consistent price. Because the result does not depend on the order of transactions within a block, this design reduces the scope for extracting value by changing transaction ordering; it does not promise a fixed price for all assets or all trading scenarios.

Q: How does COW participate in CoW DAO governance?

COW is used for governance voting in the CoW DAO, rather than being a required gas token for protocol trade execution. The current governance documentation states that the DAO's Snapshot is used to vote on CoW Improvement Proposals (CIPs). The weight of a voting address is calculated as the combined amount of vCOW and COW held by or delegated to that address, meaning voting power = the address's vCOW + COW (including amounts delegated to that address). Therefore, token holdings and delegation affect governance voting weight; the forum and Discord are used for discussion, but do not replace weighted voting on Snapshot.
