AO (AO) Price

AO is a decentralized computing network built on Arweave’s permanent data storage. It can organize many independent processes into a collaborative computing environment. For developers, processes can each run programs and retain state, then call one another through standardized messages; AO is not a single chain that requires every node to execute every transaction against one shared global state. The core of this design is “independent execution, message-based connection, and shared settlement”: a process need not reside on one fixed server, and the network allows different virtual machines, message ordering, and security guarantees to be selected; messages using the same format are ultimately settled on Arweave’s data layer. AO’s parallelism therefore comes from many processes being able to exist and cooperate simultaneously, rather than from assigning every participant the same task to compute repeatedly.

An AO message is generally first received and processed by a Messenger Unit (MU), then a Scheduler Unit (SU) determines its order and writes it to Arweave, and a Compute Unit (CU) executes the target process accordingly and returns a result. Fixing the order first makes the history of a given process replayable and verifiable; the CU executes the program and maintains that process’s state. The three unit types divide responsibilities rather than replace one another: the MU is the entry point for external messages and communication between processes; the SU provides queryable message ordering and a storage record; and the CU loads an execution module, processes messages, and updates in-memory state. Each type can have multiple instances for horizontal scaling, so more processes or computing demand do not mean every process shares one execution queue. The Outbox produced after a message executes may also contain subsequent messages or requests to create processes, which the MU continues to route through the appropriate flow.

Under AO’s official economic and protocol design, the AO token’s core role is to provide economic security for message passing in the network, rather than simply functioning as uniform Gas at a fixed price. The protocol treats AO as stakeable capital for message security: the value and number of messages requiring security guarantees create demand for security capital, while the amount of AO committed by participants and their expected return constitute supply. The paper describes this relationship as D = S, where D is the economic demand for message security and S = K × R; K is the amount of AO actually committed to security, and R is the expected annualized return on that AO. This model describes the relationship among security demand, committed capital, and return; it does not promise a fixed yield. For staked message services, nodes may set their own rates and conditions, and prices vary with competition between service supply and demand. Therefore, the fact that AO is used for message security does not imply that every operation must incur the same AO fee.

AO has a maximum total supply of 21 million tokens. New AO is minted every five minutes; the protocol sets the total amount minted each month at 1.425% of the remaining unissued supply at the beginning of that month. As the unissued amount falls, the amount of AO produced in each subsequent five-minute cycle also falls. This is a continuously declining issuance curve, rather than a sudden halving of a single reward at a particular block or date. Because issuance continually releases a fixed monthly proportion of the remaining supply, its issuance rate halves about every four years; “about four years” describes the half-life cadence of the issuance rate, not a discrete supply event that happens once every four years. In the absence of pre-mining or freely discretionary additional supply shocks, the minting curve can be derived from this rule; however, minted, transferable, and market-circulating supply are not the same concept.

AO is not issued through a presale or team pre-allocation. Instead, it is distributed under predetermined minting rules to participants connected with the Arweave base layer or AO economic activity. Minting began when the AO testnet launched on February 27, 2024; for the first four months, all newly minted AO went to AR holders. After that early arrangement ended, one-third of ongoing minting goes to AR holders and two-thirds to participants holding eligible cross-chain assets in AO. Consequently, over the full lifecycle, the entire share from the first four months makes AR holders’ cumulative share greater than one-third during the continuing phase. The two shares use different calculation bases. An AR holder’s share equals that wallet’s AR balance divided by all AR balances included in the calculation; a cross-chain asset share is weighted by multiplying the wallet’s amount of that asset by the asset’s native annualized staking yield, then dividing by the weighted total of all eligible cross-chain assets. The one-third/two-thirds split applies only when eligible cross-chain assets exist; if none exist, the protocol paper’s rule is that all newly minted AO for that period goes to AR holders. For cross-chain assets, eligibility continues while the asset remains in the AO network; once that portion is withdrawn back to its original network, it no longer qualifies for continued AO minting. The eligible assets, bridges, and operational conditions for a given period should be determined from the applicable current official product rules and cannot be inferred from historical ratios alone.

AO’s cross-chain asset design does not use an external asset directly as its original asset on AO. Instead, contracts on both sides establish a corresponding relationship: a contract on the originating chain receives the asset, while a contract on the AO side creates a derivative representation that conforms to the AO token standard. This representation can be transferred within the AO network and used in applications; its owner can initiate an exit, but the portion of assets that exits no longer participates in AO minting eligibility. The protocol paper indicates that eligible assets should have mature, decentralized, and liquid markets, and should be yield-bearing assets with robust liquid-staking mechanisms; the bridge must also be able to separate the underlying asset from its native yield. Thus, cross-chain participants do not receive an unconditional fixed amount of AO: their share for a period depends jointly on the size of their weighted assets, the total weight of other eligible assets, and the total AO minted in that period. Specific pre-bridge or asset arrangements in historical announcements belonged to their respective stages and should not be treated as proof that all assets can currently participate.
