Trump's joke to Powell about the Fed building: I will fire him.
The President of the United States (AS) Donald Trump joked with the Chairman of The Federal Reserve Jerome Powell about the renovation of the central bank building.
"Generally, I would fire him," Trump replied when asked by a reporter what he would do if the real estate renovation budget exceeded expectations.
In the same brief interview, citing Bloomberg Business, Thursday (24/07) local time, Trump and Powell had a heated argument when they disagreed on the Fed's renovation budget of US$3.1 billion.
Trump described the budget as very expensive, but Powell rejected it because he had no knowledge of such an amount. According to him, the budget is excessive because it was calculated including renovations of other buildings from 5 years ago.
Previously, Trump and Powell have always been at odds when discussing interest rates. At the end of the interview, Trump still joked about it while laughing.
"I would be very happy if he is willing to lower the interest rates, other than that, what can I say?" he concluded.
As of this news being published, there is still no clarity on Powell's fate in Trump's hands. Recently, he mentioned that he would not fire Powell, although the two have never gotten along even since Trump took office for the first time in 2016.
