PANews reported on March 19 that, according to CoinDesk, the Machankura 2.0 project is transforming feature phones into Bitcoin hardware wallets. Launched by Kgothatso Ngako, the project aims to enable Africans to self-custody of bitcoin for the first time by using bitcoin transactions on non-smartphones (feature phones). Machankura is a software tool that allows users to use Bitcoin without an internet connection through the Lightning Network. Since its launch in mid-2022, its user base has grown from 3,500 to 13,600 and offers its services in seven African countries. As a next step, Machankura will enable users to hold their own private keys, allowing for true financial autonomy.
