Donations, Charity, Payments, Transparency Algorand launched the Aid Trust Portal to bring transparency and accountability to humanitarian operations.

Humanitarian aid is the lifeline that sustains regions in crisis. Yet, even this pure act of goodwill is not without its trust issues. Donating money to humanitarian causes often raises questions, such as whether the funds will truly reach their destination, or disappear into a maze of intermediaries, corruption and inefficiency.

This question is especially pressing in fragile contexts such as Afghanistan or Syria, where political instability, weak infrastructure and security risks create fertile ground for aid diversion. For years, humanitarian organizations and their supporters have wrestled with the same challenges: a lack of transparency in how aid moves, limited oversight for regulators and compliance teams and no reliable way to prove in real time that help has reached its intended recipients.

Reports and audits often arrive months later, when it’s too late to stop misuse. These gaps fuel mistrust among donors, frustrate agencies in the field and, most tragically, leave vulnerable populations underserved. Restoring confidence in humanitarian aid requires a system that makes fund flows visible, verifiable and immediate.

Donations getting transparent

Layer-1 blockchain Algorand has launched the Aid Trust Portal to fix these issues. The portal provides a clear operational view of aid disbursements onchain.

Interactive network diagrams on the portal show the links between senders, intermediaries and recipients. Meanwhile, timeline tools and filters let users trace individual transfers and inspect the route a single payment took. The interface is designed so program managers, compliance officers and donors can move from summary figures to transaction-level detail without technical barriers.

As the portal can display any Algorand asset tied to a public key, it surfaces more than aggregate totals. Users can interrogate routing choices, isolate unexpected intermediaries and export data sets for reporting or audit. Analytical overlays highlight patterns that warrant attention, allowing teams to prioritize investigations instead of sifting through months of paperwork.

Source: AlgorandThe portal’s practical value is rooted in Algorand’s protocol characteristics. Instant settlement removes uncertainty about whether a transfer has completed. A predictable, low-fee model keeps transaction costs manageable for large-scale disbursements. And a consensus design that minimizes energy use makes continuous monitoring less resource-intensive for operators and for the communities they serve.

Commenting on how the new portal contributes to humanitarian causes, Matt Keller, director of social impact at the Algorand Foundation, said:

“Because we can now prove — irrefutably and in real time — that aid reaches its intended recipients, humanitarian workers around the world finally have the tools to change the narrative around the opaque nature of aid. In a world where accusations of misuse and corruption are used to justify sweeping aid cuts, the Aid Trust Portal flips the script. It allows us to return to what truly matters: delivering life-saving assistance to the world’s most marginalized people.”

Powering aid operations in Afghanistan

HesabPay, an Algorand-based payments provider operating in Afghanistan, has already integrated the portal into its operations. The integration gives HesabPay’s clients — including humanitarian agencies — an independent, auditable view of disbursements that complements their internal reconciliation. This reduces the time needed to confirm deliveries and provides clear evidence to donors and regulators when questions arise.

Beyond verification, the combined setup improves decision-making. Program teams can cross-check onchain activity with field reports to target follow-up, operations managers can anticipate distribution timelines more accurately, while beneficiaries benefit from faster, secure access to assistance through a single interoperable app. The net effect is a smooth distribution chain with fewer manual steps and stronger traceability.

Restoring trust in humanitarian causes

The Aid Trust Portal underscores Algorand’s broader vision of applying blockchain to solve real-world problems. By making aid payments visible and verifiable in real time, it strengthens trust in fragile environments where confidence is often in short supply.

Together with partners like HesabPay, the initiative shows how digital tools can improve accountability, reduce friction and ultimately ensure that more assistance reaches the people who need it most.
