National Primary and Secondary School Students Safety Education Day: Zhejiang Regions Promote "Sending Safety" Through Online and Offline Maritime Education

March 30 is the 31st National Primary and Secondary School Safety Education Day. Based on the distinctive features of its jurisdiction, the Zhejiang Maritime Affairs authorities carried out a variety of waterborne safety education activities, delivering safety knowledge and hands-on practical skills to children, and firmly strengthening the waterborne safety line of defense for young people.
In Ningbo, 30 students from the Yinzhu District Red Scarf Academy—team captains’ school—came to Dongqian Lake, a picturesque scenic spot, and boarded a sightseeing passenger boat to begin an immersive waterborne safety classroom. Volunteers from the “Heart Bridge” lecturer team of the Yinfeng Maritime Affairs office, while telling students the historical stories of Dongqian Lake, carried out on-site practical instruction. They demonstrated hand-over-hand the correct way to wear life jackets, and also staged real-time demonstrations of practical first-aid skills such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the Heimlich maneuver first-aid method. During the voyage, the students turned into little “shipbuilders,” manually assembling ship models and exploring the fascinating mysteries of ship construction through hands-on practice. At the end of the event, the organizer customized and presented a seed paper medal to each student on-site. With an immersive and experience-based educational approach, the event firmly established a waterborne safety line of defense for young people, fully supporting the safe and healthy growth of students.
In Zhoushan, at the playground of the Third Primary School in Caoyuan Town, Shengsi County, the atmosphere was bustling and warm. A total of 175 students sat together, their eyes tightly fixed on maritime volunteers and firefighters. The “Zhou Ji” volunteer service team of the Zhoushan Maritime Affairs Bureau’s Shengsi detachment, together with the Shengsi County Fire and Rescue Brigade, carried out a themed activity titled “Maritime Fire Safety Delivery.” Volunteers acted as “safety counselors,” using language full of childlike fun and vivid, easy-to-imagine comparisons to turn dry boarding safety, maritime firefighting, and knowledge on seeking help when in danger into a series of easy-to-understand and easy-to-remember little stories. They patiently answered the students’ questions. “So that’s how you have to wear a life jacket to be safe!” After experiencing the proper wearing of a life jacket firsthand, Zhang Haoyu, a sixth-grade student, said excitedly, “I’d only seen it on TV before. Today I did it myself, and I realized every step can’t be careless. From now on, when I ride a boat, I will definitely wear it correctly.” Firefighters also demonstrated how to use fire extinguishers and fire escape techniques on-site. They organized the students to visit fire rescue vehicles and conducted simulated fire extinguishing drills, helping students掌握 emergency safety and avoidance skills through hands-on operation. Cheers and applause kept coming one after another on-site.
On the Taizhou campus affiliated with East China Normal University, the children boarded a passenger boat and began their waterborne safety learning journey of “a day as a little ship captain.” Maritime staff guided the children to tour core areas of the ship such as the bridge and deck, and, combined with real circumstances, provided detailed explanations of the relevant knowledge about passenger transport travel and ship navigation. They also led the children hand-over-hand to learn practical safety knot tying, and patiently instructed them on the correct way to wear life jackets and the standardized use of life-saving floats. Through personal experience, the children mastered solid waterborne safety skills. In addition, through close-range contact with the ship, they fully felt the unique charm of maritime culture, making the理念 of “knowing safety, understanding safety, and guarding safety” deeply take root in their hearts.
It is reported that, on this National Primary and Secondary School Safety Education Day, the Zhejiang Maritime Affairs authorities held a total of 17 different publicity and education events across the province, covering more than 1,000 students. In the next step, the Zhejiang maritime affairs system will continue to innovate waterborne safety education formats, expand the coverage of publicity and education, and carry out safety science popularization activities on a regular basis. They will deliver safety knowledge to more children, providing support for the safe growth of primary and secondary school students with professional strength.
