Uber Technologies (NYSE:UBER) is moving beyond its core ridehailing and delivery lanes, announcing it will acquire parking reservation app SpotHero Inc. and fold its capabilities directly into the Uber app. The integration will allow customers to reserve parking at more than 13,000 garages, lots and valets across more than 400 cities in the US and Canada, according to the company’s statement. Financial terms were not disclosed, and the transaction remains subject to regulatory approval and other customary conditions, with closing expected in the first half of the year.

Management is positioning the move as a way to widen Uber’s funnel beyond traditional rides. The parking feature is expected to target high-volume users such as commuters, as well as customers heading to events, venues and airports. Members of the paid Uber One subscription are set to receive parking benefits in the future, potentially strengthening the stickiness of the membership program. SpotHero was valued at $290 million following a 2019 funding round, according to PitchBook, offering some perspective on the scale of the asset Uber is adding to its platform.

Chief Executive Officer Dara Khosrowshahi said Uber has built its platform around giving people more ways to get around without needing a car, but noted that when users do choose to drive, bringing SpotHero into the Uber app could make the experience easier and draw more people into the Uber ecosystem. The acquisition follows a broader product push over the past year, including the introduction last May of prepaid and price-lock passes offering discounts to commuters on regular routes, as well as the rollout of physical airport kiosks starting at LaGuardia in New York for travelers without the app. Taken together, these initiatives suggest Uber is working to deepen engagement across a wider set of transportation use cases.
