Sam Bankman-Fried's sentence could be shortened by more than 4 years: Business Insider

  • Sam Bankman-Fried may have his sentence reduced by 4 years and is expected to be released in December 2044.
  • The individual's prison sentence was reduced due to accumulated "good behavior time," participation in prison programs, and the period spent in custody before sentencing.
  • He was convicted in 2023 of seven counts of fraud and conspiracy for attempting a fraud of $11 billion (approximately 1.57 trillion yen, based on an exchange rate of 143 yen to the dollar).

According to Business Insider, Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder and former CEO of the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, may be released in December 2044, more than four years earlier than the originally announced sentence.

In 2023, he was convicted of seven counts of fraud and conspiracy, and was sentenced to 25 years in prison in March 2024 for orchestrating a $11 billion (approximately ¥1.57 trillion) fraud.

The prosecution revealed that he had misappropriated customer funds from FTX to his own cryptocurrency hedge fund, Alameda Research, and used those funds to support investments, make political donations, and increase his and his associates' wealth.

After the verdict, he was transferred from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, to a low-security federal prison in San Pedro, California.

During that time, he lived in the same room as Sean Combs, also known as "Diddy," and responded to a surprise interview with Tucker Carlson.

According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the inmate's sentence was reduced due to the accumulation of "Good Conduct Time" allowing inmates to earn up to 54 days off per year and participation in unspecified prison programs, as reported by Business Insider. Time spent in custody before sentencing is also taken into account.

Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda Research and a key witness for the government, has been sentenced to 2 years in prison but is expected to receive a similar sentence reduction and is projected to be released in May 2026.
