Sei Labs proposes to deprecate CosmWasm and native Cosmos accounts in favor of supporting only EVM mode.
According to a report from The Block on May 8, Deep Tide TechFlow announced that Sei Labs submitted a Sei Improvement Proposal (SIP-3), suggesting that the Sei Blockchain architecture transition to a mode that only supports the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), and plans to abandon CosmWasm and native Cosmos accounts. This proposal aims to simplify the Sei network architecture, improve user and developer experience, and pave the way for the upcoming Giga upgrade.
Sei is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain built on top of the Cosmos SDK and currently supports both EVM and native Cosmos accounts. However, according to Sei Labs, the dual-architecture model increases the complexity of users managing addresses and developers maintaining cross-system interoperability. If SIP-3 is approved, only EVM addresses will be allowed to initiate transactions in the future, the CosmWasm contract and native Cosmos message processing will be removed, users will need to migrate their assets to the EVM wallet, and developers will need to migrate their applications to the EVM. Sei Labs believes that this move will improve development efficiency and enhance Sei's competitiveness in the EVM ecosystem.
