Macron Addresses Nuclear Energy
(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron underscored Tuesday the crucial role of nuclear power in ensuring “independence and energy sovereignty,” while advocating for enhanced collaboration and investment in the sector.
During his address at the Nuclear Energy Summit in Paris, Macron highlighted that “nuclear energy is key to reconciling independence and energy sovereignty, decarbonization and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, and competitiveness, which enables job creation in our economies.” He emphasized that nuclear energy not only supports environmental objectives but also drives economic opportunities through job creation.
Macron pointed out the necessity of maintaining competitiveness, stating that energy should be produced “as cheaply as possible,” while simultaneously tackling global environmental challenges by reducing emissions through nuclear power generation.
He further remarked on the geopolitical implications of energy dependence: “We want greater independence, and we see in the geopolitical context we face how, when we are too dependent on hydrocarbons, this can become a tool of pressure or even destabilization.” Macron framed nuclear energy as a strategic lever for national and regional stability.
Highlighting the importance of uniformity in the sector, he argued that standardization across nations is “essential” to strengthen competitiveness. “We cannot be profitable and competitive if we create a new prototype each time,” he explained. “Therefore, we must standardize—standardize between our countries and standardize across different manufacturers as much as possible—to establish capacity standards.”
Reaffirming that nuclear power has been “better integrated” into European legislation and strategic frameworks, Macron urged the European Union to “go even one step further,” signaling a push for deeper alignment and cooperation across the continent.
