Mars Finance reports that on March 19, the parent company of payment platforms Square and Cash App, Block, quietly rehired some employees who were laid off at the end of February. The initial layoffs involved approximately 4,000 people and were part of the company’s strategic shift towards artificial intelligence. Several employees revealed their return to the company on LinkedIn. Design engineer Andrew Harvard stated on March 3 that he was informed the layoffs were due to a “clerical error” and has accepted the company’s rehire offer. Technical lead Richard Hesse said he spent two days convincing management that his team’s work was “crucial to customers” and required sufficient staffing, leading the company to agree to rehire some of the laid-off employees. Creative strategy head Chane Rennie also revealed on March 12 that he was asked to return about a week after the layoffs.
