Microsoft engages AI agents for scientific research

At the Build 2025 conference, Microsoft announced the Microsoft Discovery platform, which uses AI agents to "transform the process of scientific discovery."

The platform is "expandable" and capable of handling certain scientific tasks "from start to finish." It will help accelerate research and transform the research process using artificial intelligence, claims the corporation.

"The platform allows scientists and researchers to collaborate with a team of specialized AI agents to achieve scientific results with high speed, scale, and accuracy, utilizing the latest innovations in AI and supercomputers," the announcement states.

The company emphasizes the importance of creating a unified platform where artificial intelligence can encompass both scientific disciplines and cognitive processes related to the management of scientific thinking. To facilitate such interaction, AI agents must be able to:

  • reason based on a complex and contextual graph that unites all sources of knowledge;
  • specialize in different areas and tasks;
  • learn from the results and adapt the entire research strategy accordingly.

Discovery is built on the Microsoft Azure platform. The company announced collaborations with several clients to carry out joint innovations in various fields such as energy, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and chemistry.

Recall that in April, Microsoft began testing the Copilot update for Windows, which allows AI to analyze the image on the screen and provide suggestions regarding the functionality of different applications.
