‘There’s More Upside Potential For Crypto’: GameStop CEO After Buying 4,710 BTC – Here’s How To B...
On May 28, 2025, GameStop made headlines by revealing its first-ever purchase of Bitcoin (BTC), officially kicking off its strategy to hold the cryptocurrency as part of its reserves. The move signals a bold step into the world of digital assets for the video game retailer.
In total, GameStop snapped up 4,710 BTC, funding the purchase through the issuance of convertible notes. It’s a move that mirrors the playbook of companies like MicroStrategy, blending traditional finance with a strong bet on digital assets.

A Resilient Store of Value
In a conversation with historian and prominent Bitcoiner Pete Rizzo, GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen shed light on the reasoning behind the company’s decision to add Bitcoin to its balance sheet. Cohen pointed to a long-term vision and growing confidence in BTC as a resilient store of value in an increasingly digital economy.
Better Than Gold
Cohen believes that “Bitcoin and gold can serve as hedges against the global devaluation of currencies and systemic risk.” However, he sees Bitcoin as having distinct advantages over gold. Among them, he highlights portability, authenticity, and ease of storage—but it’s scarcity that he emphasizes most. “There is a fixed supply of Bitcoin—21 million,” he notes, “whereas with gold, advancements in technology continue to make its true supply uncertain.”
Cohen also pointed to the rapid growth in the supply of gold, driven by ongoing mining and recycling efforts. He warned that this expanding supply might outpace the growth in demand, posing a significant risk to gold’s long-term price stability. In contrast, Bitcoin’s fixed supply of 21 million offers a level of predictability that gold simply can’t match.
Greater Upside Potential
Another point the GameStop CEO emphasizes about Bitcoin is its asymmetric upside potential:
“Gold is a more mature market. It has a market capitalization of around 20 trillion, while bitcoin today is at about 2 trillion. And if the thesis is correct and bitcoin becomes the digital gold we embrace, then there is more upside potential, but we will see what happens. No one has a crystal ball.”
Ryan Cohen, CEO of GameStop.
Cohen shares a similar perspective with Michael Saylor, president of MicroStrategy—the publicly traded company holding the largest amount of Bitcoin in its treasury
Saylor believes Bitcoin could reach millions in value in the coming years. Moreover, he is confident that the current bull cycle still has “fuel” left, with Bitcoin potentially hitting $180,000 this year.
