Do You ByteDance Pauses Seedance 2.0 Global Launch Due to Hollywood Copyright Dispute Pressure

On March 15, according to sources, ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has suspended its global launch plans for Seedance 2.0, its latest video generation model, following copyright disputes with multiple Hollywood studios and streaming platforms.

The trigger for the incident was Disney sending a cease-and-desist letter to ByteDance last month, accusing it of using Disney characters to train and power the Seedance 2.0 model without authorization.

Notably, videos previously generated by this model quickly went viral on Chinese internet, with many containing segments involving major Hollywood characters and scenes.

Disney stated that ByteDance pre-installed a pirated character library for the Seedance 2.0 model, covering IP series such as "Star Wars" and "Marvel," and labeled these characters as "public domain" materials, thereby circumventing copyright restrictions and allowing the model to successfully generate these characters.

According to reports, ByteDance officially released the Seedance 2.0 model in February this year, claiming it targets professional film and television, e-commerce, and advertising sectors, and can simultaneously process text, images, audio, and video to reduce content production costs.

Although the company originally planned to launch the model to global users in mid-March, the current release plans have been postponed due to the model's unauthorized use for intellectual property infringement.

Reports indicate that ByteDance's legal team is currently conducting comprehensive inspections of potential legal risks, while engineers are upgrading protective mechanisms aimed at preventing the model from generating content that could cause further intellectual property infringement.

Overall, this intellectual property controversy has profoundly revealed the copyright "red line" that generative AI faces during its commercialization and landing process.

The model's suspension of release this time indicates that while generative AI technology tools are breaking boundaries, they must also make up for compliance shortcomings.

Therefore, only by establishing a comprehensive copyright protection mechanism can legal risks be avoided and the path to globalization for this model product be paved.
