Heroiv Sevastopol Street was renamed in Kyiv: what is it now called?

The renaming was carried out with the aim of decolonizing toponymy in the city of Kyiv / photo UNIAN The Kyiv City Council renamed Heroiv Sevastopol Street in the Solomyansky District of Kyiv to Akademik Shalimov Street. The corresponding decision was made at today's plenary session of the city council, it was supported by 64 deputies (out of 66 present in the session hall).

The renaming was carried out with the aim of decolonizing toponymy in the city of Kyiv and honoring the memory of outstanding figures of Ukraine.

The decision document states that the name "Akademik Shalimov Street" was proposed in honor of the Ukrainian surgeon, one of the founders of the Ukrainian surgical school Oleksandr Oleksiyovych Shalimov (1918 - 2006). Shalimov performed about 40,000 operations. He was a member of the International Union of Surgeons, the Association of Surgeons of Austria, Germany, Russia, and Ukraine. Full member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine and the New York Academy of Sciences.

Renaming of streets and other objects in Kyiv

In Kyiv, the process of renaming streets and other objects continues, with the aim of de-Russifying the toponymy of the city. In particular, on February 8 in the capital of Ukraine, Povitroflotsky prospect was renamed Air Force of Ukraine prospect (prospect in the Shevchenkivskyi and Solomyanskyi districts of Kyiv, Chokolyvka, Solomyanka, Cadetskyi grove). The commander of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Lieutenant General Mykola Oleschuk, reacted to this decision of the Kyiv City Council, calling it "historic".

In addition, at that meeting, the Kyiv City Council renamed a number of city objects. In particular, a street named after the famous Georgian actor, singer, politician and Honored Artist of Ukraine Vakhtang Kikabidze appeared in Kyiv. As you know, he harshly condemned Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Now Bulgakov Street in Sviatoshynsky District is Vakhtang Kikabidze Street.

On February 8, Bilhorodska street in the Solomyan district was renamed Vasyl Ovsienko street - a public figure from Urain, a political prisoner of Soviet concentration camps; in the Desnian district, Mykola Mateyuk street - to Vasyl Ivanys street - a fighter for the unity of the Kuban with Ukraine; in the Darnytskyi district, Chernihivska street - to the street of the Chybineev brothers - defenders of Ukraine, who died in the current war against the Russian Federation.

In December 2023, Pavlo Ostrovsky, a member of the Naming Commission under the Kyiv Mayor, said that since 2022, more than 300 renamings have taken place in Kyiv. He noted that after the Russian full-scale invasion, the demand for de-Russification intensified as much as possible. Before that, both in the country and in Kyiv, the process of "decommunization" in the names of objects had been going on for many years.
