"Helium Plus" that allows participation in Solana's DePIN project with just a Wi-Fi router launched | CoinDesk JAPAN
One of the most famous DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network) projects on Solana is Helium, which aims to transform the way companies contribute to the Helium Network by launching a new service called "Helium Plus."
Helium Plus enables public Wi-Fi service providers and businesses to join the network using existing Wi-Fi routers, requiring no additional hardware. This allows users and businesses to earn HNT, the network's native token, by supporting wireless connectivity while leveraging community-driven mobile infrastructure.
DePIN is a system that utilizes blockchain, providing incentives for individuals and organizations to introduce and maintain real-world infrastructure such as wireless networks by granting cryptocurrency as rewards. Such networks transition the ownership and operation of infrastructure from centralized organizations to a decentralized, community-led model.
Helium focuses particularly on decentralized wireless connectivity, allowing users to provide network coverage through individually installed "hotspots." Participants can earn HNT tokens by supporting mobile data transfer and expanding network availability.
Prior to the announcement on July 31, joining the Helium ecosystem typically required the introduction of physical hotspot devices that necessitated an initial investment and technical setup. By utilizing Helium Plus, users can leverage existing Wi-Fi routers, effectively transforming any location with Wi-Fi into a Helium access point, thereby reducing the cost burden for users who wish to operate the network.
"Helium Plus significantly advances the ways companies can contribute to the Helium network," said Mario Di Dio, Helium's Network General Manager, in a press release shared with CoinDesk. "Helium Plus enables immediate low-cost wireless integration, reducing infrastructure costs while simultaneously creating new revenue streams and enhancing connectivity. The simplicity of this process is the key to unlocking the full potential of this expansion."
