FBI AGENTS ARRESTED XU ZEWEI, A 33-YEAR-OLD CHINESE NATIONAL, IN MILAN

🚨 He was detained at Malpensa Airport on July 3 when arriving from Shanghai. The United States had been searching for him since November 2023 under an order from the Southern District of Texas. Italy is holding him in prison in Busto Arsizio pending extradition.
💉 He is accused of hacking research on COVID-19 vaccines at the University of Texas in 2020, working directly for the Ministry of State Security of China (MSS). He also stole data from American virologists and immunologists during the pandemic.
Xu worked for Shanghai Powerock Network Co., one of the companies that China uses for government hacking. Along with Zhang Yu (a fugitive), they led the “HAFNIUM” campaign that compromised over 60,000 systems in the US, including critical vulnerabilities in Microsoft Exchange.
He faces charges of electronic fraud, aggravated identity theft, conspiracy, and unauthorized access to protected computers. Maximum penalty: 32 years in prison. His wife claims he is just “an IT technician” on vacation.
⚖️ “Even if it takes years, we will track down the hackers and hold them accountable for their crimes. The United States does not forget,” said prosecutor Nicholas Ganjei. He is one of the first high-profile Chinese spies arrested by the FBI in Europe.
