Germany has not yet seized 5 billion dollars in Bitcoin related to the copyright infringement website Movie2K.
German authorities may have overlooked approximately 45,000 Bitcoin related to the illegal movie site Movie2K, valued at nearly 5 billion USD. According to the Arkham platform, this Bitcoin remains in over 100 wallets that have not moved since 2019, associated with addresses of Movie2K and is not part of the nearly 50,000 BTC that Germany seized and sold in mid-2024.
In January 2024, German police seized 49,858 BTC from two operators of Movie2K and sold them for an average price of 57,900 USD, generating approximately 2.8 billion USD. However, just a few months later, the price of Bitcoin surged, causing that amount of BTC to potentially be worth over 5 billion USD, leading to criticism that Germany had "sold too early."
If they want to hold the remaining Bitcoin, the authorities must prove the illegal source from Movie2K and identify the owner of more than 100 related wallets.
